The value of knowledge transfer offices within Universities has been universally recognised as an effective way to add value to the academic mission by engaging with companies, sharing knowledge, encouraging innovation and developing commercial activities. At the same time, these activities are seen as integral to economic and social development since they ensure that knowledge produced by the universities makes a meaningful contribution to the wellbeing of the economy and community.
As such, Universities are often expected to provide a powerhouse of knowledge creation, sharing and innovation. With the economic growth in Latin America more attention is being paid to the role and contribution of Universities to help support the different economic, political and social aspirations. Yet, in many cases the research infrastructure, capacity and capability are limited. So, as the growth boom continues and the thirst for new knowledge increases, Latin American Universities will need to ensure appropriate systems, skills and strategies are in place to support the discover and dissemination of new knowledge i.e. the research environment (culture), infrastructure and skills sets.
In this sense, the International Doctoral student-supervisor conference LAURDS 2017, creates a space for discussion on new ways of promoting doctoral research, not only from the relationship of the actors involved in the institutions research processes, in terms of culture and research strategy, but also Identifying good practices in the accompaniment to doctoral students.
LAURDS 2017 also seeks to generate collaboration networks and create a sustainable contribution dynamics over time, allowing the generation of knowledge in this field.
LAURDS 2017 is mainly addressed to doctoral students, doctoral supervisors and potential doctoral supervisors, who want to reinforce their knowledge about methodologies and good practices in the accompaniment of doctoral students; and who want to strengthen their relationship with colleagues interested in the same issues
Submission Guidelines
All contributions must be original and not simultaneously submitted to another journal or conference. The following contribtions categories are welcome:
- Abstracts:
Title. Concise and informative. Titles are often used in information-retrieval systems. Avoid abbreviations and formulae where possible.
Author names and affiliations. Please clearly indicate the given name(s) and family name(s) of each author and check that all names are accurately spelled. Present the authors’ affiliation addresses (where the actual work was done) below the names. Indicate all affiliations with a lower-case superscript letter immediately after the author’s name and in front of the appropriate address. Provide the full postal address of each affiliation, including the country name and, if available, the e-mail address of each author.
Corresponding author. Clearly indicate who will handle correspondence at all stages of refereeing and publication, also post-publication. Ensure that the e-mail address is given and that contact details are kept up to date by the corresponding author.
Present/permanent address. If an author has moved since the work described in the document was done, or was visiting at the time, a ‘Present address’ (or ‘Permanent address’) may be indicated as a footnote to that author’s name. The address at which the author actually did the work must be retained as the main, affiliation address. Superscript Arabic numerals are used for such footnotes.
Abstract
A concise and factual abstract is required of no more than 300 words, including headings. To support this, the event is using “structured abstracts”. A structured abstract should contain the following headings (as in-line or run-in headings in bold): Context, Objective, Method, Results, Conclusions and Keywords. An abstract is often presented separately from its article, so it must be able to stand alone. For this reason, references should be avoided, but if essential, then cite the author(s) and year(s). Also, non-standard or uncommon abbreviations should be avoided, but if essential they must be defined at their first mention in the abstract itself. Please see below for an example of a structured abstract:
Keywords
Keywords are very important for the abstracts, because of the common practice of retrieving information electronically. Keywords act as the search terms. Select keywords that are specific, enough and that reflect what is essential about the document. Put yourself in the position of a person researching in your field: what would you look for?
