Jogja, as Yogyakarta, is affectionately known, is often called the soul of Indonesia. Jogja is located in the heartland of Java, the most populous of the 18,000 islands that comprise the Indonesian archipelago that straddles the Indian and Pacific Ocean. Jogja, rich with cultural heritage, sits at the foot of Mt. Merapi and is surrounded by ancient Buddhist and Hindu temples.
Jogja is the capital of the Yogyakarta Special Region and the only Indonesian province governed by a monarch, the Sultan Hamengku Buwono X, due to its central role in the Indonesian War of Independence. The Sultan's Palace in the city center is an open living museum with daily performances of traditional Javanese theater, dance, and music. Neighborhoods blend classical architecture with modern life, where visitors can explore leafy winding alleys and witness local artists crafting batik textiles, Wayang puppets, silvery jewelry, and gamelan musical instruments. Shoppers delight among the many vendors along Malioboro street.
Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) is the oldest university in Indonesia and one of the largest in Southeast Asia. Established in 1949, UGM is a national public university with 18 facilities, 27 research centers, and over 200 degree programs for more than 56,000 students. Famous alumni include the current Sultan and President Joko Widodo, various national government ministers and province governors, as well as notable scientists, authors, and poets.
