In recent years, many hospitals and healthcare systems around the world have witnessed an unprecedented shift in their business models - from electronic patient records to a changing insurance industry - the whole healthcare sector has navigated and embraced a tidal wave of changes. Without any doubt one of the core drivers in this transformation is IoT and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications. While The Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the most recent megatrends, a popular buzzword, reflecting our notion of a world-wide connected set of anything, anyone and in any place at any time, M2M is an emerging technology that allows seamless connectivity of devices over different networks without the need of human intervention. Connecting billions of devices over the Internet is going to give rise to an unprecedented number of new applications, services and business opportunities. Forecasts predict that the installed base of healthcare IoT devices (not including wearable fitness trackers) is expected to grow from approximately 160 million in 2016 to 646 million in 2020. The new trend is mHealth, M2M solutions for the healthcare. M2M for medication control (pillboxes with embedded sensors that report to a doctor if the patient is taking their medications on time and correctly; devices that can be programmed for family members to receive alerts); smart pills that will help monitoring of health conditions; augmented asset monitoring and tacking in the medicine supply chain - to name only a few. And this increasing connectivity in the mHealth world shows no signs of slowing down - from adaptable remote patient monitoring and control, to more enhanced drug dissemination, healthcare asset monitoring and tracking - in fact, it's only accelerating.
In the last few years, this field has attracted wide attention from researchers to address the potential of the IoT in the healthcare sector by considering various practical challenges. Even though there are numerous applications, services and prototypes proposed, despite the vigorous research in architecture and platforms, interoperability and security, IoT and M2M specifically related to the health sector are still in their infancy.
This workshop will try to bring together researchers, specialists and practitioners from academia, research labs and industry from all over the world to address the challenges in the evolving world of IoT and M2M for healthcare and create a platform to exchange ideas, discuss solutions and obstacles in this context.
