English Language has now more than ever become an exigent need in different fields such as media, industry, economy, diplomacy, politics, and academia. The growth of this need is due to the changes the world has witnessed politically, economically, culturally and scientifically during the 21st Century.
These changes have lead to a shift in the requirements of an English language speaker/user. Therefore, the parameters of the English language classroom have equally changed, i.e.; the teacher is no longer “the Sage on the stage” but “the guide on the side”. Put differently, EFL classroom is/should be, now, more learner-centered to attain to the needs and expectations of the 21st Century learner. The latter is expected to be digitally literate to fit in the globally digitalized age.
Considering the political, economic, strategic, academic, ideological and cultural changes in the current century, the skills targeted behind the EFL teaching/learning process, are not any more the four macro skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing solely; rather, they extend autonomous learning, collaboration, critical thinking, communication, creativity, to mention but a few.
Nevertheless, certain teaching practices are considered to be unfit for the 21st century digitalized context requirements, as well as the academic and the economic needs and expectations . Thus, rethinking the teaching practices has become paramount and should inevitably take into consideration the 21st century learning skills (referred to as the four Cs), literacy skills (known as information, media and technology) and life skills such as flexibility, leadership, and social skills.
