The expansion of Indonesia’s oil palm plantations over the past 25 years has placed Indonesia as the largest palm oil producer in the world with a contribution of 48% of the total volume of palm oil production in the world (Feinterie, et al. 2010). With an area of not less than 11.5 million hectares (of which 56% are privately owned and state-owned, while the rest are smallholder oil palm plantations), oil palm plantations have been able to increase community income, absorb employment of around 10 million (Basiron 2007; Siradjuddin 2015; Laing 2016), has also made a real contribution to the country’s foreign exchange of $ 16.5 billion or around 160 trillion per year (BPDP Sawit, 2016). Even for 2018 this country’s foreign exchange from the palm oil industry is able to reach Rp. 228 trillion.
However, even though many Indonesian palm oil plantation companies have obtained ISO 14000, 9000 certification and / or Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (“RSPO”) or ISPO certificates, Indonesian oil palm plantations are still being questioned and sued by certain parties, so that they become polemic in public space. The accusation that the land of oil palm plantations in Indonesia comes from primary forests (as a cause of deforestation) and oil palm plantations has resulted in a decline in biodiversity has surfaced in 2011 which resulted in Indonesian CPO / palm oil production being banned from entering the European market. Both accusations are believed to continue to emerge in the future. Evidently recently the results of the European Union (EU) parliamentary voting also stated that Indonesian palm oil causes deforestation, decreases in biodiversity / habitat degradation, human rights issues and social standards. If left unchecked, it is feared that it will have a negative systemic impact on the progress of Indonesia’s oil palm industry in the future.
Therefore, FACULTY OF FORESTRY of Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) in collaboration with the Center for Nature Study, Advocacy and Conservation (PUSAKA KALAM) and the French Agricultural Research Center for International Development (CIRAD) consider it necessary to invite experts from various parts of the world and the archipelago region and is multi-disciplinary to discuss objectively and scientifically these negative accusations in an international conference. Thus the International Conference on Natural Resources and Environmental Science (ICNREC) was held with the main topic "Impact of Oil Palm Plantation on Physical and Chemical Environment, Biodiversity and Local-Social Economic". In addition to obtaining the latest and valid scientific data and information on the impact of Indonesian oil palm plantations on deforestation, biodiversity and socio-economic communities, this international conference is also expected to minimize the diversity of opinions among experts/researchers, central/regional government, NGOs and stakeholders related to oil palm plantations and industries. In addition, the presence and participation of academicians, researchers, bureaucrats, NGOs, business owner/practitioners, media journalists and others in this International Conference is very important.
