INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE AND INDONESIAN BIOLOGY CONSORTIUM CONGRESS 2021
“Building Optimism Post Covid-19 Pandemic: Conservation and Utilization of Biodiversity for Sustainable Development in Indonesia”
Background
The world, through the United Nations, has set the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with 17 goals (including eradicating poverty and hunger, improving health and education, developing more sustainable cities, tackling climate change, and protecting forests and oceans) and 169 associated targets as a global development agenda until 2030 for the sake of humanity and planet earth. Intergovernmental countries ambitiously proclaimed the SDGs through the United Nations resolution issued on 21 October 2015. The Indonesian government has ratified the SDGs through Presidential Instruction (Instruksi Presiden) number 6 of 2017 that leads us, the Indonesian citizen, to support and achieve sustainable development goals wherever we reside and work, including our contributions as a part of the academic community in Universitas Papua. Sustainable development aims to fulfil the needs of natural resources to support the welfare of our children in the future.
UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) also agreed on the mission of higher educations to produce high-quality graduates, responsible citizens, and lifelong learners. Therefore, the four pillars of learning set by UNESCO, namely learning to live together (learn to live together in harmony), to know (learn to know something), to do (learn to do something), and to be (learn to be something) are a necessity for higher educations. For Indonesia, these efforts continue to be implemented, so that the higher educations are focused on high order thinking and high order learning to create a generation that is intellectually superior, morally or culturally elegant, highly committed to various social roles, and has the quality in mastering technology, science, and art. Universitas Papua provides academic education related to science and technology, which is very important for supporting other applied sciences. One of them is supporting environmental conservation and the use of biodiversity.
Nowadays, we can see that biodiversity is being used on a large scale, paying little to no attention to the conservation aspect even though the two things must work together to maintain a balance in sustainable development in Papua. The land of Papua, especially West Papua province, has fairly high biodiversity and a variety of flora and fauna endemicity. It also owns several conservation areas, such as the Arfak Mountains Nature Reserve, the Tambrauw Mountains Nature Reserve, and the Wondiboy Mountains Nature Reserve, which embodies a high potential for diversity. All these Nature Reserves accommodate many endemic animals. In addition, Papua also has the second largest mangrove forest in the world, located in Bintuni Bay, and whale sharks in Cenderawasih Bay National Park. In West Papua, several activities have been carried out to conserve and use biodiversity, such as breeding bird-wing butterflies (Ornithoptera paradisaea), extracting Pandanus conoideus, akwai (Drymis sp.), and Myrmecodia sp. as herbal medicines. Properly executed development activities combined with an integrated protected area system would enable the West Papua Province to meet the community’s needs while conserving its rich biological resources.
Objectives
The objectives of the 2021 International Conference-Indonesian Biology Consortium:
- To support global sustainable development for the sake of humanity.
- To improve the competitiveness of leading research and scientific publications in biodiversity and biosystematics, conservation of natural resources and the environment, molecular biology and biotechnology, microbiology and health, and bioanthropology.
- To foster cooperation between research institutions, researchers, academics, government, and private institutions in encouraging efforts to protect the germplasm in Papua.
- To encourage the participation of young researchers to perform their skills and experience in scientific dissemination at the international level.
- Organize an exhibition of education and entrepreneurship of local Papuan products based on biological resources.
Benefits
The benefits of the 2021 International Conference-Indonesian Biology Consortium:
- Participants will gain knowledge about the development of science and technology in biodiversity and biosystematics, conservation of natural resources and the environment, molecular biology and biotechnology, microbiology and health, and bioanthropology.
- Establishing a collaborative relationship between research institutions, researchers, academics, government, and private institutions in encouraging efforts to protect the germplasm in Papua
