ETIS 2020 is the 4th European Tangible Interaction Studio.
Tangible interaction is a research field addressing areas at the border of the physical and the digital. Nowadays many researchers, designers, developers and artists work in this area and a vast range of products and applications are designed and produced accordingly.
The aim of ETIS 2020 is to gather young European researchers in the field of tangible interaction, to get them in touch with internationally renowned researchers and to establish networks for their future. This summer school is a follow-up of the previous editions held in Bidart (2013), Fribourg (2016) and Luxembourg (2017) and will be a unique opportunity to train in the field of tangible interaction and to discuss your research with professors and other young researchers.
We encourage the participation of researchers with different backgrounds from both academic and applied/industrial research. The Studio will include voices from enterprises and private research institutions working in the field of tangible interaction. We aim to provide participants with insights for applied research possibilities, in order to bring tangible interaction principles out of the lab, in the everyday use. Senior researchers from the industry and internationally known professors will introduce different topics related to tangible interaction from their different points of view.
Participants to the Studio are encouraged, but not obliged, to present their work by submitting a short paper and/or propose a workshop.
Submission Guidelines
Junior Scientists but also practitioners, engineers and designers are invited to propose a talk or a workshop about their research in the field of Tangible User Interface (TUI) including mixed/augmented reality, organic user interfaces, or physical computing.
We welcome submissions in the form of theoretical foundations and frameworks of TUI; design guidelines and methods; prototypes, tools and toolkits for TUI; design cases, and TUI applications in different domains.
Topics of interest of ETIS 2020 include:
- TUI & Food
- TUI for Immigration and cultural heritage
- TUI for Industry of the future
- TUI & Health
- TUI & Education
Short papers (2-4 pages including references) for oral presentation and workshop proposals have to be submitted to Easychair [link]. Papers should be formatted according to the ACM Templates and should not be anonymized.
Submitted papers will be reviewed by experts and selected by relevance with the proposed topics, quality of research, and potential to provoke discussions during the meeting.

Venue
The conference will be held in Siena, Italy.
Siena is located in central Italy - between Florence and Rome - in the heart of Tuscany’s rolling hills and breathtaking landscapes. Tuscany is the cradle of Italian art and language: a famous land of great culture and civilisation, with an extraordinary natural environment and an outstanding gastronomic tradition.
Staying in Tuscany is an opportunity to gain a great cultural experience, since the region has preserved most of its architectural beauty unspoiled for centuries. Six Tuscan locations – among them the historic centre of Siena - have been nominated UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The University of Siena is one of the oldest universities in Europe, having been founded in 1240. Most of the University buildings, including Santa Chiara Lab, are inside the city walls of Siena, whose historical centre is off-limits to traffic. Santa Chiara Lab is a strategic project of the University of Siena launched in 2016. It offers a creative context for developing new ideas with a strong vocation to the development of a multidisciplinary culture. Santa Chiara Lab includes a Fab Lab which collaborates with cultural and political institutions, districts, trades associations and third sector organisations promoting codesign in the field of cultural heritage, disability studies, health care, food, IoT.
