DeSForM 2023
Boundless: Aesthetics, Human Experience and Intelligence for the New Normal
The role of design as a vital bridge between human interaction and technological innovation is increasingly evident as the world adapts to the new normal. Formerly distinct boundaries between disciplines have been blurred as creatives and engineers embark on collective cutting edge endeavors. DeSForM 2023 - Boundless: Aesthetics, Human Experience and Intelligence for the New Normal - the 12th edition of the conference will present leading research that investigates the integration of aesthetics, functionality and advance technologies to enhance experiences, well-being, and business.
The conference aims to bring together researchers across disciplines to explore DeSForM’s theme via four key topics: Form, interactivity and the human experience; Fashion: processes, visualizations, artifacts and beyond; Innovation in product and service design; Wearables and alternative skins. The conference will explore how the pursuit of enhanced human experiences connect emergent disruptive technologies with artifacts, intangible services, intelligent systems and traditional skills; effectively creating a boundless space that brings together our spiritual, emotional, and physical selves with the external world.
In the new normal, users seek intuitive designs and services that enable them to transition between environments, intentions and time, highlighting the need for integrated design and witnessing the acceleration of hybrid approaches in blended environments for practitioners. We will also discuss how designers can enhance the impact they have created through the adaptation and enhancement of design processes, and integration of creative thinking, artificial intelligence, novel technology and craftsmanship.
DeSForM 2023 invites professionals from academia, industry and the creative community to come together to collaborate and engage in active discussion, as well as to explore future opportunities and challenges.
CALL FOR PAPERS & WORKSHOP PROPOSALS
We will like to invite papers and workshop proposals on the following topics:
Form, interactivity and the human experience
This conference theme focuses on exploring the relationship between tangible artifacts and their experiential function; each supporting the other to ensure seamless adoption by consumers. How can form, materials and construction that involve precise considerations, together with advanced technology, contribute to the human experience? How can we move between the boundaries of three dimensional forms and two dimensional materials to mass customize products that are adapted to users’ needs? We welcome submissions that explore user-centered design methodologies incorporating interactive technologies, ergonomic investigations and inclusive practice that aim to enhance quality of life through design, development and customization of products and environments.
Fashion: Process, Visualizations, Artifacts and Beyond
While steeped in craft and heritage, the fashion industry is also highly progressive in leading creative innovations in the way we design, create, distribute and consume tangible products, augmented reality designs and non-tangible services. Contemporary consumers consider purchasing opportunities in both physical situations and virtual landscapes. The gap between fashion and digital technologies is closing fast and this has led to radical transformations in all facets of the industry; from fundamental creation through enhanced production to virtual presentations. The conference invites papers that investigate all aspects of fashion impacted by technology. The aim is to open up and explore new arenas in aesthetics, functionality, process, manufacturing and retailing, and how these contribute to a fashion eco-system that straddles both physical and digital realities.
Innovation in product and service design
The rapid development of digital technologies has brought about innovations that enable users to participate in the evolution of a wide variety of products during their entire lifecycles. This participation facilitates strong interaction between designers and customers. Such communication helps both industries and non-commercial organisations to mine invaluable sources of information, and in doing so has proved vital in innovative and sustainable product design. We seek contributions that advance our knowledge in theories, methods and artefacts for product and service design.
Wearables and alternative skins
Wearable tech and recent investigations into soft systems have shone new light in the area of alternative skins and interactive materials, enabling technology to gain closer contact with the physical body for aesthetic and functional purposes. The market for wearable tech and alternative skin is projected to grow exponentially in the coming years. The miniaturization of components, the rise of IoT and advances in conductive materials and design structures, are all factors contributing to the improvement of usability and comfort. Designers are specialists in their fields, but the emergence of tech-enabled products and materials, has opened up myriad opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and application. We are seeing a seismic shift in the ways that designers create and the way in which users interact with conventionally passive products. The transcendence of distinct discipline areas has led to the creation of alternative platforms for communication, well-being and play. We invite submissions that explore new concepts, practices in development, emerging fabrication technologies and approaches that contribute to the design of wearables, materials and systems.
Submission Guidelines
We invite authors to submit high-quality, original and previously unpublished contributions that explore one or more conference topics. Submitted papers (For full, short and workshop) will be assessed through a double-blind review process. Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings.
Contributions may be submitted in the following categories:
Full papers (Oral presentation): Full papers should be up to twelve pages (including references) and should present theoretical research, novel frameworks or research-through-design projects addressing the conference topics. Accepted papers will be given a 20-minute presentation slot at the conference.
Short papers (Demonstration + Poster): Short papers should be up to six pages (including references) and should describe actual design or art projects, which will be presented through live demos and posters during the conference. Authors of short papers are also encouraged to provide in their papers a link to download media demonstrating their results, whether images, videos, or other media types.
Workshops: Workshops should be introduced in a short paper format but with a clear indication in the title stating that it is intended for a workshop. What is proposed will lead to tangible outcomes such as prototypes, videos, models, etc. In addition to the 4 main themes of this conference we encourage workshops to explore new approaches, creative techniques and advanced technology for future design applications.
PDF’s can be used for the review process. But the camera ready versions must be a Word or Word compatible file. Authors must submit as a Word or Word compatible file to prepare the manuscripts. Please do NOT submit LaTeX files, because it will be difficult for our publisher to typeset the conference proceedings.
