The Editors-in-Chief and Editorial Board of the Springer Journal Environment, Systems, & Decisions announce a Call for Papers for a Special Issue of the journal that will explore the foundations of disruptions, adaptation, and resilience (DAR) in socio-technical systems (STS).
Prospectus
The societal and economic upheavals brought by the financial crisis of 2008, by the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, 2005 Hurricane Katrina, and similar events have demonstrated the need to fundamentally understand the underlying process and mechanisms of disruptions, adaptation, and resilience to ensure intelligent and appropriate response and preventive measures.
The ability to quantitatively validate theoretical models of DAR against actual data is largely missing. This is not a trivial problem, because after the disruption, the data on the unrealized “normal” dynamics of the system does not exist. Improvements in the data availability and processing capabilities, novel data sources, such as social networks, and novel ways to make decisions using data, such as machine learning, presents an opportunity for a quantum leap in understanding the dynamics of STS disruptions.
Invitation
The Editors-in-Chief invite submissions in the area of Disruptions, Adaptation, and Resilience in Socio-Technical Systems. Papers are encouraged in theory, methods, and practice of modeling and data analysis for DAR in socio-technical systems, including, but not limited to, the domains of:
- Natural and man-made systems
- Economic and financial systems
- Infrastructures
- Urban and rural evolution
Areas of interest include (but are not limited to):
- Mathematics and mechanisms of DAR
- Quantitative analysis of past disruptions
- Real-time data analysis
- Machine learning and statistics
- Visualization
- Simulation and agent-based models
- Input-output models
- General equilibrium models
- Decision-making under uncertainty
- Uncertainty quantification
