Approaching Residency of Marine Robots for Deep-Sea Research (ARMR-DSR)
Subsea exploration and monitoring are of vital significance in many fields include early tsunami warning, oceanography, marine biology, coastal safety, natural resource exploitation, and environmental preservation. From measuring methane hydrate deposits to strategic defense installations, marine robotics is among the most promising technologies that accelerate the progress of these fields. An emerging frontier of marine robotics is the endeavor to achieve long-term residency of autonomous underwater vehicles. Supported by subsea infrastructures such as the ocean observatories, resident autonomous underwater vehicles (RAUVs) acquire power and cabled communication from deep-sea stations. RAUV will provide prolonged dynamic measurements of the subsea environment and be able to attend to emerging subsea events promptly.
This workshop aims at raising the awareness of the significance of RAUV and providing a platform for discussing existing technological challenges in achieving long-term residency. Our focus lies on identifying critical demands for RAUVs and collecting novel ideas and concepts for major topics. We will discuss topics including efficient learning with deficient perception data and minimum supervision, robust robot control and system reliability in highly uncertain environments, and long-term autonomy. We hope to bring together researchers, practitioners, and scientists from related disciplines to envision the future of RAUVs and subsea exploration.

Publication
We invite interested authors to submit extended abstracts (2 pages) and workshop papers (5-6 pages) of relevant works on deep-sea applications. Accepted abstracts and papers will be posted on the workshop website but will NOT be included in the official IEEE proceedings. All submissions will go through a single-blind review process refereed by guest reviewers. Authors of accepted abstracts will be invited to present their works during the poster session. Authors of accepted workshop papers will be invited to give an oral presentation with the option to also present during the poster session. Authors of a selected number of accepted submissions will be invited to submit an extended version of their work to a Special Issue of the IEEE Journal of Oceanic Engineering that covers the major topics of interest of the workshop.
All submissions should be in the form of a single PDF in ICRA format (templates: LaTex and MS-Word).
