The Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning, a biennial event first launched in 2007, stressed on the advancement of the “Theory and Practice of Service-Learning” in the Asia-Pacific region. The second conference, held in 2009, discussed on multi-community development and cross-border communication. The third conference, taking place in 2011, emphasized on the differences and impacts facilitated by Service-Learning.
In the face of increasing societal and environmental challenges, the need to influence and empower our youths to actively develop and act on their sense of social responsibility is ever pressing. In both academic and co-curricular applications, Service-Learning plays a critical role in tertiary institutions in educating and engaging our youths to develop the knowledge and skills (Head), attitudes and dispositions (Heart) to make life choices that are socially responsible (Habit), in their journey of growth to become leaders in society.
The 7th Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning presents three complementary broad Conference Tracks for the sharing of best practices in promoting Service-Learning for a lifelong journey of social responsibility.
Abstract Submission
The three Conference Tracks for abstract submission are:
1. Applied Scholarship & Research for Service-Learning
This conference track accepts submissions for applied scholarship and research for the development of Service-Learning. Research focus areas may include, but are not limited to:
- Theories and conceptual models of Service-Learning
- Faculty engagement for Service-Learning
- Bridging teaching, scholarship, and research for Service-Learning
2. Service-Learning Pedagogy & Best Practices
This conference track accepts submissions for innovative Service-Learning pedagogy, curriculum, and other applications relevant to the development of social responsibility. Presentation focus areas may include, but are not limited to, best practices in:
- Enabling meaningful reflections and actions
- Addressing local and/or global issues
- Developing social innovation and solutions for a sustainable future
3. Service-Learning: An Ecosystem for Collaborative Good
This conference track accepts submissions for Service-Learning collaborations, partnerships, and community engagement for social responsibility. Presentation focus areas may include, but are not limited to, shared vision, goals, and measures of stakeholders in the Service-Learning ecosystem in developing:
- Individual Social Responsibility
- University Social Responsibility
- Corporate Social Responsibility
- Global Social Responsibility
Submission Guidelines
All papers must be original and not simultaneously submitted to another journal or conference. The following paper categories are welcome:
Presentation Formats
- Paper Presentation (20 minutes)
Presenters will conduct formal oral presentations, and share the session with two-to-three other presenters on similar topics. Each presenter has 20 minutes for their presentation. A short time will be reserved at the end of the session for questions and summarization.
- Panel Presentation (90 minutes)
A group of papers on similar themes or research issues are proposed as a complete session. Those presenting within this option should submit a group proposal involving up to three presentations. A recommended discussant should also be named in the proposal. A panel presentation should take 45 minutes, with 45 minutes for discussion.
- Poster Presentation (90 minutes)
These sessions will provide an opportunity for the author to display information on their initiatives and achievements in the field. In this format, presenters talk informally with participants who come to their boards.
- Resource Sharing Workshop (90 minutes)
An interactive session that allows active involvement of audience participants throughout the presentation. The workshop should engage the audience in sharing collaborative expertise in one or more of the Conference Themes. The session may be problem-based or have an inter-disciplinary or cross-cultural focus.
- Flipped Classroom Discussion Session (90 minutes)
Before coming to the session, participants should have watched/read the presentations. In the session, the presenter(s) shall act as facilitator to engage participants actively in the discussions to see how the content can be applied to individual contexts. The session may be problem-based or have an inter-disciplinary or cross-cultural focus.
