The Arizona Linguistics Circle is an annual graduate student-run conference held at the University of Arizona. The theme of this year's conference is Language Technology and Media, that is work that employs media technologies or research that investigates language in media. However, abstracts from all areas of linguistics are welcome and encouraged. Our goal is to provide a welcoming yet constructive environment for linguistic inquiry and the dissemination of new and continuing linguistic research.

Each year, ALC features three invited speakers whose research aligns with the conference theme. This year's keynote speakers are Sonja Lanehart (University of Arizona), Ellen Riloff (University of Utah), and Gareth Roberts (University of Pennsylvania).

The conference will be held at the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ.

Submission Guidelines

Abstracts are invited for 20-minute talks with 10-minute question periods to follow. All papers must be original. Submissions are limited to one individual and one joint abstract per author. Abstracts should be a maximum of 500 words in length not including keywords, references, figures, and tableaux. Abstracts should include some discussion of data and indicate that the project is of reasonable depth. All abstracts should be anonymous: abstracts which contain author-identifying information will be rejected.

Upon acceptance, presenters will be asked to submit a version of your abstract with author-identifying information included. This will be shared on the conference website. Presenters will also have the opportunity to publish their Conference Proceedings in the Coyote Papers, LingCirlce's ongoing publication series.

Conference dates: October 16-18, 2020

The COVID pandemic has created uncertainty about how ALC14 will take place. The organizing committee is currently planning the conference with the expectation that it will be held in-person in October. However, depending on what the situation looks like as we approach the conference dates, we may explore the possibility of moving the conference to a virtual format. The final decision will be made in August or early September with special attention paid to the preferences of the accepted authors.
