Technology is enabling, not just new business models but also new social models that are transforming governments and society. For example, between October 2010 and April 2017, more than 1.13 billion Indian citizens (nearly 90% of the country’s population) were issued unique digital identities, also known as “Aadhar” IDs. Emergent research documents the significant positive impact of Aadhaar on a range of government services and schemes that provide social protection to India’s poor and deserving beneficiaries. Aadhaar is but one example of technology solutions are increasingly being used to stimulate growth, reduce corruption, solve issues in public health and education, and create positive change in communities.
The WITS Feeder event theme, titled Technology-Enabled Socioeconomic Transformations, aims to bring together researchers who are interested in issues and solutions that are at the intersection of ICT and public policy. We encourage submissions that document and demonstrate the nature and impact of technology-enabled solutions to urgent and challenging societal problems. We welcome relevant research papers from a broad range of topics including (but not limited to) the topics listed below.
