CALL FOR PAPERS
Workshop for Undergraduates in Educational Data Mining and Learning Engineering
Educational Data Mining 2021
June 29, 2021
The long-term success of any community of research and practice depends on bringing in the next generation of scholars to participate in the field. The objective of this workshop is to showcase the work of next-generation scholars and practitioners in education data mining, including both undergraduates and advanced high school students, and facilitate conversations on how we can create a talent pipeline in the field. Undergraduates have been at the forefront of generating interest in learning engineering and educational data mining, and this workshop will crucially feature their work and center their perspective. This workshop is interdisciplinary in nature, and will convene voices across industry, academia, and government. The full-day workshop will be conducted virtually, with a mix of panel conversations, asynchronous paper presentations, live talks, and opportunities for mentorship and networking before and after the workshop.
We invite advanced undergraduates and high school students to submit papers in two categories: research papers, and student-centered design projects.
Every participating undergraduate will be offered a mentorship session before or after the event with one senior member of the field and one graduate student. Our organizers will evaluate student interests and match the undergraduate students with a senior faculty member whose interests align. These mentorship sessions will be short introductory conversations (one hour). Mentors will be encouraged by the organizers to follow up with undergraduate mentees.
Research Papers:
Undergraduates or high school students may submit 4-8 page papers to the workshop. The references section at the end of the paper does not count towards the page limit. These papers may overlap with an existing published article or article under review, so long as the student submitting the article is a co-author of that existing article.
To be accepted by the workshop, the research presented in the paper must utilize educational data mining and/or learning engineering and have a clear focus on improving student outcomes. For a list of topics considered to be educational data mining, see https://educationaldatamining.org/edm2021/call-for-papers/
The papers will be peer reviewed by the organizers and invited speakers of the workshop, and accepted paper authors will record presentations of their papers and participate in live discussions of their papers with workshop attendees.
Non-students (i.e. faculty members, research scientists working in industry) may be co-authors on papers, so long as an undergraduate or high school student is first author of the paper.
Student-Centered Design Projects:
We also invite submissions for a separate student-centered design track, where students and their mentors can submit a 1-2 page project idea focusing on best practices or new ideas to engage young people in the EDM field. Project proposals may address topics such as: 1) How to motivate faculty and industry to see value in recruiting and mentoring high school and undergraduate students; 2) What kinds of networking and support should be available for students to facilitate relationships among students at different universities, institutions, or organizations; and 3) how to emphasize recruiting diverse students in EDM. Three project ideas will be selected by the organizers and the authors will be invited to present on their ideas during the workshop. Similar to the research projects, the student-centered design projects should also be led by either an undergraduate high school student, but can be co-authored by graduate students and faculty mentors. Students who submit to the research track are also eligible to submit to the design track as well.
Submission Guidelines
Reviewing will be single-blinded, to enable verification that the first author is an undergraduate or high school student.
Submissions should be in the same format as the main educational data mining conference format
- Word: https://educationaldatamining.org/edm2020/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2019/09/edm_word_template2020.doc
- LaTeX: https://educationaldatamining.org/edm2020/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2019/09/edm_submission2020.zip
Research papers selected for inclusion will be published open-access in the workshop proceedings for EDM2021.
All submissions to either track must be received by April 15, 2021, 1159pm Hawaii time.
