Visible Evidence XXVI
Los Angeles, July 24-28, 2018
Visible Evidence, the annual scholarly conference on documentary and nonfiction film, media, culture and politics is coming back to Los Angeles.
Hosted by University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts, the conference will investigate how media scholars, critics, activists, teachers, filmmakers, film programmers, and curators are rethinking the study and practice of documentary and nonfiction media from a diverse range of methodologies and areas of expertise.
Drawing inspiration from Los Angeles, a global city of multitudinous and varied cultures, VE XXVI particularly encourages scholars to examine the ways in which the media of the Pacific Rim have shaped documentary and nonfiction media studies.
Submissions exploring any topic related to the study of documentary media are welcome. We welcome papers that draw from a wide variety of critical lenses, as well as focus on any case study or medium.
Visible Evidence XXVI will feature a range of panels, workshops, plenary sessions, screenings, and special events revolving around nonfiction media and its practices, histories, and theories.
Submission Guidelines
Each panel, workshop, and screening session will be allotted one hour and forty-five minutes.
Panels will consist of three or four papers of no more than 20 minutes each. Or, panels may have three papers and one ten-minute response by a chosen respondent.
Panel chairs will ensure that at least twenty minutes is available for questions and discussion following paper presentations.
- Panel proposals require a 300-word (max) description of the panel itself; 5 keywords that identify the panel’s focus; 200-word (max) descriptions of each individual paper; 5 bibliographic entries for each paper; and brief biographies of each participant. The chair of the panel should collect all the material and submit the panel proposal here.
Workshops will consist of between five and six opening statements, in which workshop leaders can present up to forty minutes collectively of prepared or informal material. However, the emphasis of workshops is on the open and unstructured exchange of ideas and techniques between all workshop participants, and topics suited to this format will be given priority.
- Workshop proposals require a 300-word (max) description of the workshop itself; 5 keywords that identify the workshop’s focus; 50-word (max) descriptions of each individual statement; and brief biographies of each participant. The chair of the workshop should collect all of the material and submit the workshop proposal here.
Individual paper proposals may be submitted to the open call.

Participants can present in a panel or workshop and serve as a respondent.
VE XXVI also welcomes screening proposals for filmmakers to screen their work in a session devoted entirely to a single film or a series of short films by the attending filmmaker. (Screening sessions are not about curating someone else’s work). If time permits, the filmmaker will introduce the work and take questions after the screening.
- Screening proposals require a 300-word (max) description of the work or works; a screener of the film(s) with total running time; and a brief biography of the filmmaker. Submit screening proposals here.
