TTRA 2018 Europe – Ljubljana, Slovenia
Call for Papers
Travel and Tourism Research Association, Europe Chapter
Tourism as a vehicle for sustainable development
Faculty of Economics, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia
April 25th to 26th, 2018
Travel and Tourism Research Association’s 2018 European Chapter Conference will be held in Ljubljana, from 25.4.–26.4., at the Faculty of Economics, University of Ljubljana. 24.4. will be reserved for the doctoral colloquium day. 25.4. and 26.4. will be the main days of the conference. The theme of the conference will be Tourism: A Vehicle for Sustainable Development and will cover a broad range of themes, connected to sustainable development in tourism research.
Sustainable development of tourism can be applied at different levels, such as national, regional, local and firm levels. It helps to ensure the long-term competitiveness and development without the degradation of resources (Ritchie and Crouch, 2000). Mihalič (2000) recognized environmental management and its practices as a crucial factor of tourism destination development. Economic, cultural, social and aspects in the natural environment should be acknowledged in order to achieve sustainable development (Godde, Price, and Zimmermann, 2000). Political and legal environment creates the basis for proper development; it has become evident that destination governance should promote sustainable development (Gill and Williams, 2011). Policies should be oriented towards innovation (Alexandre et al., 2006), and proper planning should be used to achieve sustainable development (Castellani and Sala, 2010). Tourism firms are being forced to become sustainable by the general public (Font, 2017), but on the other hand firms are also recognizing that environmental performance can also boost financial performance (Tan et al., 2017). Sustainable innovation is a necessary precondition for the sustainability of societies and organisations and, as such, all innovative activities should be sustainable. Sustainable innovations influence principles of organisation, products, services, energy and resources used, and waste production (Jorna, 2006). Innovation an entrepreneurship are both crucial factors for success and development of tourism industry (Lopéz, Buhalis & Fyall, 2009). Sustainable entrepreneurship development is an innovation enabler in tourism and represents a vehicle for sustainable development (Lordkipanidze, Brezet & Backman, 2005).
Examples of the themes of the conference are (but not limited to):
