The sustainability challenges in the ready-made garment industry continues to create new research agenda all over the world. The multifaceted challenges stem from several areas such as poor operations management, inconsistent HR policies, unequal bargaining power in global supply chain, and weak institutional condition in the sourcing country. Most researchers seem to agree that the garment industry is a complex context that comprises paradoxical issues and forces. It provides jobs for millions of workers – often women – in developing countries, workers who would otherwise be jobless. Yet, the productivity among suppliers is relatively low while salaries are often below the living wage and workers encounter a hazardous work condition. In contrast, global buyers are exposing the suppliers to both price competition and higher CSR standards. These challenges and the paradoxical condition call for solution-oriented research within and across diverse research fields such as operations and supply chain management, occupational health and safety, political economy, organisational studies and international business.
This conference thus aims to present new research agenda and findings related to operational, social and environmental sustainability challenges affecting global garments industry. The conference wishes to bridge practitioners, researches and institutional actors to share their ideas and concerns related to sustainability of garment manufacturing and business for the future.
