The Systems Engineering Capstone Design Competition is a student-focused international forum for the design of complex systems. The competition is a leading showcase for undergraduate and graduate (Masters) design projects, such as those from capstone design courses or from baccalaureate, honors, or design-oriented graduate theses.
Designs should demonstrate System Engineering skills and knowledge to perform all the activities associated with the "System Engineering V". Designs should include analysis of Context, Stakeholders, Concepts of Operations, Requirements, Design (including trade-offs of alternate designs), Implementation, Verification, Validation, and Business Plans. Where possible, model-based simulations and/or prototypes shall demonstrate the Con-Ops and be used to generate data for design trade-off analysis. Verification testing should be demonstrated. Validation testing and Business Plans are encouraged.
Projects sponsored by faculty, industry, and government are encouraged.
Tracks
- Cybersecurity
- Decision Support Systems
- Transportation
- Design
- Process Design
- Social Engineering
BEST PAPERS:
One paper per track was awarded for Best Paper. Awards were judged by a team of experienced System Engineers and Engineering managers from industry and government and based on the quality of the written paper and the presentation. Quality was assessed by the demonstration of System Engineering skills and knowledge associated with the SE-V.
Winners for best papers in their respective tracks were:
Design Engineering: Radiological and Imagery Data Enhanced Reconnaissance Swarm (RAIDERS), Hayden Trainor, Nicole Plhamus, Matilda Brady, United States Military Academy, West Point, NY, USA.
Decision Support Systems: Chilled Water System Decision Support System, Kayla Corey, William Harding, Luke Fritzke, Caitlin Johnson, and Naif Alghunaim, George Mason University
Cyber Engineering: A Novel Technique for Identifying Geospatial Image Tampering Using Machine Learning, Stefany Cando, Ashlyn Gill, John Ailes, and Manil Trivedi, George Mason University
Social Impact: The relationship between Instagram usage, content exposure, and reported self-esteem. Marisa Lockhart, University of Virginia
Transportation Engineering: Northeast Corridor Mass Transportation System Analysis, Natalee Coffman, Yaovi Kodjo, Jacob Noble and Jaehoon Choi, George Mason University
System Process Design: Design of a Systems Engineering Handbook to Integrate Science Experiments with a ThinSat Payload, Lena S. Elhajj and Raghad G. Alahmadi, George Mason University
Submission Guidelines
Extended Abstracts due by 11:59 pm East Coast time Thursday, February 28, 2019.
