Poznań, Poland
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

================================================
Competition Format
IFIP World Computer Congress (http://wcc2018.org/) will host a PhD Student
Research Competition, where PhD students can present their original research
before a panel of judges and conference attendees. The competition will
consist of two rounds:
- Extended abstract round:
All students are encouraged to submit an extended abstract outlining their
research (up to two pages).
- Presentation at PhD Workshop:
Based on the abstracts, a program committee will select the most promising
entrants to participate in a PhD workshop which will take place at the
congress. In the workshop session, students will have the opportunity to
present their work to the judges and conference attendees. Based on the
presentations, the judges will select a group of winners.
Students who make it to this round and cannot be supported by their own
institutions will be eligible for a grant to attend the workshop. The grant
will provide funds towards congress registration fees and accommodation for
four nights in a student dormitory. Authors of accepted abstracts who request
grant support to the workshop organizers will be informed in due time about
feasibility of support.
Eligibility
The competition is primarily open to PhD students at all stages of their
study, but abstracts sent by entrants enrolled as a Master student at their
universities will also be considered.
Submission Details
Abstract Submission : Friday, May 25th, 2018- Extended deadline: Thursday, 14th June 2018
- Author Notification : Friday, June 29th, 2018
- PhD SRC Workshop : Tuesday, September 18th, 2018
Please use EasyChair (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=phdsrc2018)
to submit an extended abstract to the PhD Student Research Competition.
Each extended abstract should address the following:
- Problem and Motivation:
Clearly state the problem being addressed and explain the reasons for seeking
a solution to this problem.
- Background and Related Work:
Describe the background necessary to appreciate the work. Include references
to the literature where appropriate, and briefly explain where your work
departs from that done by others.
- Approach and Uniqueness:
Describe your approach in attacking the problem and clearly state how your
approach is novel.
- Results and Contributions:
Clearly show how the results of your work contribute to computer science and
explain the significance of those results. If you present work-in-progress,
explain how the envisaged results may contribute to computer science and
explain their expected significance.
The abstract must describe the student’s individual research and must be
authored solely by the student. Students are encouraged to submit work they
have been conducting in collaboration with others, including thesis advisors.
However, submissions are individual, so they must focus on the contributions
of the student. Submissions should consist of original work (not yet accepted
for publication). However, no formal proceedings are expected, so submitting
an extended abstract to this competition does not preclude publication
elsewhere.
Abstracts must be submitted in PDF, and be no more than 2 pages in standard
two-column SIGPLAN conference format (http://www.sigplan.org/Resources/Author/).
Each submission must contain the abstract title, the author's name, e-mail
address, and affiliation, and also contact details of the research advisor.
Submissions must be made through the on-line submission site EasyChair
(https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=phdsrc2018).
Presentations
The presentation should consist of two parts:
- A very short introduction stating the key issues of the research project (an elevator pitch).
- A talk, explaining more details.
The goal of the presentation is to convey the idea of the project in
an exciting way, rather than to give a lot of technical details.
Post-workshop Publication
At the discretion of the program committee and with the consent of the authors,
particularly worthy submissions may be recommended for a special journal issue.
After the PhD SRC Workshop, those authors will be invited to submit a full
version of their papers to a volume of Foundations of Computing and Decision
Sciences (https://www.degruyter.com/view/j/fcds), an open-access international
journal.
