CALL FOR PAPERS – DUE 1 APRIL 2017
Political action in the digital age: collective, connective and campaigning logics
Workshop (June 29-30, 2017 at the University of Melbourne)
This national workshop will focus on the (changing) logics of campaigning and collective and connective forms of political action, organisation and participation in the digital age. We will explore contemporary debates on the transformative capacities of new technologies that may benefit (or hinder i.e. fake news) processes of democracy and representational politics.
We welcome papers on these broad themes from those working within a range of sub-fields including political participation, political parties, interest groups, social movements, deliberative democracy, political communication, public opinion and political campaigns. PhD students and early career scholars are especially encouraged to participate.
The workshop will held at the University of Melbourne on Thursday 29th June and Friday 30th June. Anna Greenberg, PH.D. (partner Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research, and formerly of Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government where she taught public opinion and survey methodology) will deliver a keynote address on political campaigning and public opinion in the USA. Anna’s 15 years of experience polling in the political, non-profit and academic sectors and her experience on the National Board of the American National Election Study (2014-2017) and research work as a fellow at American University’s Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies places her at the international forefront of current debates on political organisations, public opinion, advocacy and campaigning in the digital age.
This CFP provides two options:
1. To either submit a full paper (approximately 7,000 words) prepared in advance (25th June 2017);
2. Or a work in progress paper (approximately 1,500-2,000 words).
Each ECR/Research student who submits a full paper can elect to be matched with a senior researcher who will mentor them through to journal submission and publication. Two key goals of this workshop is to strengthen the scholarly community around the Australian Political Studies Association standing group Political Organisations and Participation (see https://poppoliticsaus.wordpress.com/). Another is to develop research papers for submission for the International Political Science Association (IPSA) World Congress to be held in Brisbane in 2018 with the theme ‘Borders and Margins’. Paper abstracts (200 words) are due by deadline: 1 April 2017 and should be sent to Andrew Gibbons (PhD candidate): gibbons.a@unimelb.edu.au. For other queries contact: Dr Andrea Carson, Lecturer Political Science: carsona@unimelb.edu.au
Participants will be notified of paper acceptance by mid-April.
The workshop is supported by: School of Social and Political Sciences (Uni of Melb).
