2nd Workshop on Performance and Energy-efficiency in Concurrent Systems (PECS 2022)
Concurrent systems, based on (distributed) multi/many-core processing units, are the nowadays reference computing architecture. The (continuously-growing) level of hardware parallelism they offer has led these platforms to play a centralrole at any scale, ranging from data centres to personal (mobile) devices. Optimising performance and ensuring energy efficiency when running complex software stacks on top of these systems are incredibly challenging due to several aspects like data dependencies or resource sharing (and interference) among application threads, as well as VMs. Furthermore, hardware accelerators like GPGPUs or FPGAs introduce a level of heterogeneity that can potentially offerfurther opportunities for combined gain in performance and energy efficiency, if correctly exploited.
The goal of this workshop is to establish a venue for both academia and industry experts and practitioners, where they can discuss challenges, perspectives and opportunities are given by researching on scalable, energy-efficient and securesoftware deployed on top of modern (heterogeneous) concurrent platforms.

Virtual Event
The workshop is co-located with ACM/SPEC ICPE 2022 (https://icpe2022.spec.org/). Nevertheless, Given the uncertainty around the COVID pandemic, and also considering the success and the positive feedback of the previous edition, the 2022 Workshop on Performance and Energy-efficiency in Concurrent Systems (PECS) will take place as a virtual event. We also consider this as an opportunity to foster a broader participation in the workshop.
List of Topics
The workshop accepts papers from both academia and industry experts and practitioners in all aspects of performance assessment, modeling, optimization, and energy efficiency in concurrent systems, including (but not limited to) the following ones:
- Parallel and concurrent programming frameworks
- Heterogeneous computing
- Parallel/Distributed simulation systems
- Runtime environments for HPC or daily usage software
- Shared and concurrent data structures
- Data management and services
- Non-blocking synchronization
- Operating Systems
- Virtualization support
- Networking functions
- Security
Submission Guidelines
All papers must be original and not simultaneously submitted to another journal or conference. The following paper categories are welcome:
- Full papers of up to 8 pages including references
- Work-in-progress papers of up to 4 pages including references
Papers are required to be submitted via the EasyChair: https://easychair.org/my/conference?conf=pecs2022
Articles must use the ACM conference format. Presented papers will be published by ACM and included in the ACM Digital Library. Adhering to ACM guidelines for conferences, PECS requires that at least one author of each accepted paper attends (in person or remote) the workshop and presents the paper.
