The rapid development of the field of SNA and the closely related fields (e.g., network science, complexity science and psychological networks) has progressed our understanding of the world —from the structure of genes to the spread of disease to the development of efficient algorithms. Nonetheless, the pace of research in learning analytics has not harnessed the full potential of emerging and rapidly-developing network methods. In fact, the limited repertoire of applications and methods has been a central issue attracting attention and discussion among the communities of SNA researchers.
In the "Networks and learning analytics: Addressing Educational Challenges" workshop, which is part of the LAK 2022 conference, we would like to extend the conversation by maintaining the focus on what learning analytics of networks in learning settings can do to improve learning and educational opportunities. We encourage submissions around examples of applications and impact, including insights into socio-emotional skills development, analytics of culture and values in learning communities, opportunities to improve equitable educational practices, and other applications that can help address societal challenges embedded within educational practices. This also includes an open conversation about privacy and ethical implications of network data in the classroom, as well as the potential impact of informing a learner about their social and communication behaviours. In the workshop, we will encourage submissions that reflect on these challenges. The workshop will bring together scholars, practitioners and educators who are interested in finding solutions to the current challenges, harnessing the recent developments in the field or sharing their recent experiences and research.
The workshop will be a hybrid format (a symposium and participatory discussions). We invite contributions in the form of short papers, work-in-progress (empirical, conceptual, review or persepctive papers) as submissions to the workshop. Submissions should be related to networks in education including social network analysis, epistemic network analysis, network science and related themes. All papers will be peer-reviewed and accepted papers will be published in CEUR workshop proceedings (Scopus indexed) and presented in the workshop. The following is a list of possible themes.
Addressing the current challenges of SNA in the field of learning analytics
- How can researchers address the issues of practical applications and impact?
- How can network approaches inform socio-emotional and communication skills?
- How can network approaches contribute to the development of equitable educational practices?
- What are ethical and privacy applications for using network analysis in learning analytics?
- What are examples of successful network analytical applications that analyze systems to help advance impact in learning analytics?
- How can methodological rigor and reporting be balanced with practical relevance?
Discussion of the potentials of novel methods or novel applications of existing methods and reflecting on their relevance to practical applications
- Recent advances in SNA methods and approaches including new tools, measures. and techniques applied to learning or learners.
- Innovative data collection, analysis, or presentation methods.
- Temporal networks, and temporal aspects of networks in general.
- Psychological networks.
- Generative network models.
- Software demonstration for analysis of learning networks.
Moreover, we will discuss about the formation of a special interest group that contributes to building bridges between community members and helps increase knowledge and understanding of current and future SNA methods and applications. The formation of this interest group will be discussed in the meeting and possibly a working group may be formed to work on the issue.
Submission guidelines
This year, workshop papers will NOT be included in the main LAK proceedings. Instead, papers will be published in CEUR proceedings, indexed in Scopus.
Papers should be 4 to 8 pages long (around 2000-4000 words). Submitted papers must use the CEUR Workshop Proceedings template, available for Word and Latex.
The submission process will be carried out in EasyChair
