International Traffic Safety Conference - (POSTPONED TO LATE 2024)
The number of road traffic deaths continues to rise steadily, reaching 1.35 million in 2016, as reported by (WHO 2018). To add to this, road traffic injuries are now the leading cause of death for children and young adults aged 5–29 years. The concern about road safety has significantly grown over the past years globally and in Qatar. The National Road Safety Action Plan was developed in 2013 as the first step towards achieving the ambitious vision outlined in the Qatar Road Safety Strategy (2013-2022) for “a safe road transport system that protects all road users from death and serious injury”. One of the action plans is to organize a bi-annual traffic safety conference to bring experts, scholars and practitioners of road safety together. In 2018, the 1st International Traffic Safety Conference (ITSC 2018) was organized in Doha from 26 – 27 November under the patronage of His Excellency, The Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al-Thani. The goal of ITSC is to showcase practical approaches and innovative solutions through multi-track platforms. As a continuation of this successful conference, the 2nd ITSC will be held in late 2024 under the Patronage of His Excellency, the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior and President of the National Traffic Safety Committee, Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al-Thani. The main objectives are to recognize the transportation needs for the developing countries and to introduce, improve and strengthen arrangements for monitoring serious injuries from road traffic accidents to facilitate action to meet the new targets for the Decade of Action for Road Safety. Moreover, to encourage developing and implementing comprehensive legislation and policies to decrease the numbers of deaths and injuries in these countries. ITSC 2023 will jointly be organized by Qatar Transportation and Traffic Safety Center- Qatar University, and National Traffic Safety Committee (NTSC) - Ministry of Interior, in collaboration with Ministry of Transport and Communications, Ministry of Public Health, General Directorate of Traffic, and Public Works Authority.
