The annual International Symposium on Software Reliability Engineering (ISSRE) is focused on innovative techniques and tools for assessing, predicting, and improving the reliability, safety, and security of software products. ISSRE will be celebrating its 30th edition in Berlin, Germany, and will continue to emphasize scientific methods, industrial relevance, rigorous empirical validation and shared value of practical tools and experiences as paper selection criteria.

Call for Research Papers
The research track at ISSRE 2019 is soliciting original, unpublished research papers in three categories: (1) full research regular (REG) papers, (2) practical experience reports (PER), and (3) tools and artifact (TAR) papers. Papers will be assessed with criteria appropriate to each category. ISSRE looks for original research exploring new scientific ideas, contributing new evidence to established research directions, or reflecting on practical experience.
Authors of the best REG papers accepted and presented at ISSRE will be encouraged to submit an extended version of their papers to a special section of the Information and Software Technology journal.
REG papers should describe a novel contribution to reliability of software systems. Extensions of reliability research into adaptive AI systems, blockchains and large sensor infrastructures are particularly welcome. Regardless of the domain, novelty should be argued via concrete evidence and appropriate positioning within the state of the art. REG papers are also expected to clearly explain validation process and its limitations.
PER are expected to provide an in-depth exposition of practical experiences and empirical studies collected through the application of known research tools and methods related to ISSRE topics. PER need to identify and discuss relevant lessons learned. The goal of PER is to offer evidence of reduced risk for future tech transition of the same or similar technology. ISSRE strongly encourages PERs that combine the efforts of researchers and industry practitioners.
TAR papers should describe a new tool or artifact. Tool-focused TAR papers must present either a new tool, a new tool component, or novel extensions to an existing tool. Tool-focused TAR papers should include a description of: 1) the theoretical foundations, 2) the design and implementation concerns, such as software architecture and core data structures, 3) experience with realistic case studies and observed advantages over similar tools. Making the tool publicly available is strongly encouraged to allow continued evaluation process. Artifact-focused TAR papers should cover 1) a working copy of a software and 2) experimental data sets.

Paper Categories
Submissions can be made in one of the following categories (authors are required to indicate the category as part of the paper’s title).
- REG papers: 10 pages + 2 pages (for references alone).
- PER papers: 10 pages + 2 pages (for references alone).
- TAR papers: 6 - 10 pages (with references).
Papers that exceed the number of pages for that submission category will be rejected without review.
Topics of Interest
Topics of interest include development, analysis methods and models throughout the software development lifecycle, and are not limited to:
- Primary dependability attributes (i.e., security, safety, maintainability) impacting software reliability
- Secondary dependability attributes (i.e., survivability, resilience, robustness) impacting software reliability
- Reliability threats, i.e. faults (defects, bugs, etc.), errors, failures
- Reliability means (fault prevention, fault removal, fault tolerance, fault forecasting)
- Metrics, measurements and threat estimation for reliability prediction and the interplay with safety/security
- Reliability of software services
- Reliability of open source software
- Reliability of Software as a Service (SaaS)
- Reliability of software dealing with Big Data
- Reliability of model-based and auto-generated software
- Reliability of software within specific types of systems (e.g., autonomous and adaptive, green and sustainable, mobile systems)
- Reliability of software within specific technological spaces (e.g., Internet of Things, Cloud, Semantic Web/Web 3.0, Virtualization, Blockchain)
- Normative/regulatory/ethical spaces pertaining to software reliability
- Societal aspects of software reliability
- Anonymizing Rules
Authors shall anonymise their paper. As an author, you should not identify yourself in the paper either explicitly or by implication (e.g., through the references or acknowledgments). However, only non-destructive anonymization is required. For example, system names may be left un-anonymized, if the system name is important for a reviewer to be able to evaluate the work. For example, a paper on experiences with the design of .NET should not be re-written to be about “an anonymous but widely used commercial distributed systems platform.”
Additionally, please take the following steps when preparing your submission:
* Remove authors’ names and affiliations from the title page
* Remove acknowledgement of identifying names and funding sources
* Use care in naming your files. Source file names, e.g., Joe.Smith.dvi, are often embedded in the final output as readily accessible comments.
* Use care in referring to related work, particularly your own. Do not omit references to provide anonymity, as this leaves the reviewer unable to grasp the context. Instead, a good solution is to reference your past work in the third person, just as you would any other piece of related work.
* If you have a concurrent submission, reference it as follows: “Closely related work describes a microkernel implementation [Anonymous 2014].” with the corresponding citation: “[Anonymous 2014] Under submission. Details omitted for double-blind reviewing.”
* If you cite anonymous work, you must also send the deanonymized reference(s) to the PC chair in a separate email.
* Submissions that do not conform to the above submission deadline, anonymization and formatting guidelines (e.g., are too long, use fonts or line spacing smaller than what is indicated) or are unoriginal, previously published, or under submission to multiple venues, will be disregarded.
Formatting Rules
Submissions must adhere to the IEEE Computer Society Format Guidelines as implemented by the following LaTeX/Word templates:

Each paper must be submitted as a single Portable Document Format (PDF) file. All fonts must be embedded. We also strongly recommend you print the file and review it for integrity (fonts, symbols, equations etc.) before submitting it. A defective printing of your paper can undermine its chance of success. Please take a note of the following:
* Submissions should be anonymous.
* The first page must include the title of the paper, the type of the paper (REG / PER / TAR), and a maximum 200-word abstract.
* Please take into account that the abstract will be used by the reviewers to bid on papers. Thus, describe the paper goals clearly, as well as the means used to achieve them.
* The first page is not a separate page, but is a part of the paper (i.e., it has technical material in it). Thus, this page counts toward the total page budget for the paper.
* The page limit includes everything except references.
* There is no page limit for references - however, authors must not put any text or figures on the pages for the references - if so, those pages will be included in the page limits above (it is acceptable for the references to start on the last page of the paper as long as it is within the page limit).
* Pages should be numbered.
* The use of color for figures and graphs is allowed only if the paper turns out to be readable if printed in grayscale.
* Symbols and labels used in the graphs should be readable as printed, without requiring on-screen magnification.
* Try to limit the file size to less than 15 MB.
Authors of accepted papers will be expected to supply electronic versions of their papers and are encouraged to supply source code and raw data to help others replicate and better understand their results.
Paper Submissions
Papers are submitted via EasyChair.
The program committee will perform double-blind reviewing of all submissions, with limited use of outside referees. Papers will be held in full confidence during the reviewing process, but papers accompanied by nondisclosure agreement forms are not acceptable and will be rejected without review.
Authors must anonymize their submissions (see above for guidelines). Submissions violating the formatting and anonymization rules will be rejected without review. There will be no extensions for reformatting.
Review Process and Author Response
After the papers have been reviewed, but prior to the Program Committee/Board meeting, the reviews will be made available to the authors to respond to any factual errors in the reviews. Rebuttals do not include additional information about the research or a submission of an updated or revised paper. Author responses will be made available to all PC/PB members before the paper is discussed for selection in the PC/PB meeting. The submissions website will contain full author-response guidelines.
Best Research Paper Award
ISSRE is pleased to announce the Best Research Paper Award, attributed every year to the best accepted paper in the Research Track.
Call for Industry Track Papers
Goal
The objective of the Industry Track program is to establish an efficient dialogue between software practitioners and software engineering researchers concerning the challenges, findings (both positive and negative), encountered obstacles, and lessons learned on software reliability. Of particular interest is information on applying novel software development, verification and validation practices in diverse lifecycle styles, industry sectors, and software types.
The Industry Track papers and presentations will address the application of software engineering practices (which may include work on principles, techniques, tools, methods, processes) to a specific domain or to the development of a substantial software system. In particular, we are interested in techniques that increase system reliability by preventing, detecting or correcting bugs early during the development lifecycle. Also, we are interested in downstream bug metrics and prediction methods.
We expect Industry papers and presentations to be of interest to software development professionals, as well as to software quality and process improvement groups with concrete relation to industrial application.

This year’s edition of ISSRE Industry track will feature the following exciting news
Best paper Awards:
This year ISSRE will include two best paper awards given in the main industry track.
Best Practice Paper Award:
This category will award the best among the full papers accepted to appear to the ISSRE 2019 industry track. Candidates to these awards are all full papers accepted to the industry track, presenting novel ideas and related results.
Best Disruptive Paper Awards:
This category will award the most disruptive idea accepted to appear to the ISSRE 2019 Industry track. ALL papers (short, and regular papers) accepted to the industry track are eligible. Candidates to this award are those papers describing and motivating wild, novel and disruptive ideas that will address problems afflicting industry.
A special industry committee including specialists of 4 different areas (software, networks, cloud and distributed systems) will propose 2 to 3 candidates for each award. The final selection will be done by the audience attending the presentation of the candidate papers.
Birds of a feather session:
Authors of papers selected for the industry track will be invited to propose a BoF (Birds of a Feather) sessions to provide a gathering place and discussion forum on selected areas of interest. BoF sessions are meant to present papers, but to enable open, "brainstorming" forums mixing academia and industry to share their current interests, goals, technology, environment, or backgrounds. Each BoF session will include a moderator from academia.
Submission and formatting guidelines
Given the large number of high quality industry papers in the past few years and the success of the Industry track, we have created a new track of "full papers". All accepted papers will be submitted for publication to IEEE Xplore.
There are two different alternatives for ISSRE Industry Track submissions:
1. Full papers including submission consisting of 6-page papers (including references).
This submission will be reviewed by three reviewers giving feedback. Accepted papers will be submitted for publication to IEEE Xplore.
2. Short papers: including two type of submissions: i) 1 page abstract (including references) and presentation (max 20 slides), and ii) 2 pages short paper (including references).
These submissions will also undergo similar review as the 6-pages papers. Abstracts and presentations will appear in the proceedings.
Papers, presentations and abstracts (even if a one-pager) must be written in English, and be formatted according to the IEEE Computer Society Format Guidelines. Papers that exceed the page limits specified below, or are outside the scope of the symposium, or do not follow the formatting guidelines will be rejected without review.
The goal is to encourage wide industry participation.
In recent years, the ISSRE industry program has expanded and has covered a wide range of topics, including cloud computing, agile development, mobile communications, defect prediction, release management, defect classification, rejuvenation, security, customer experience/satisfaction, availability, social network analysis, big data analysis, and specific reliability concerns of the automotive, aviation, healthcare, telecomm, and other industry sectors.

Review Process
The abstracts will be reviewed by the Industry Track Program Committee and the selected authors will have a chance to present a talk (20 to 30 minutes) at the ISSRE 2019 conference. At least one author must register to ISSRE and be physically on site in Berlin to present their contribution.
