2019 International Seminar of the Department of Architecture:"Live the city, between yesterday and tomorrow"
The future of the world lies in the cities and according to the United Nations, by 2050, 50% of the world's population will live there. The urbanization that has taken over the modern world has really conquered space and transformed a large part of the cities. It seems to be unstoppable, entire areas are absorbed by suburban areas which, in turn, will be transformed into urban areas and, possibly, extensions of cities. At the moment when this happens, people and communities try to adapt to new lifestyles, new spatial realities, and to restriction of space and the excessive densification of cities.
The seminar "Living the city, between yesterday and tomorrow" will address this issue from several angles. Our concerns, as actors in construction, are about transformations and emerging spatial realities. Cities have developed according to several urban scenarios and the consequences are serious difficulties that city dwellers experience on a daily basis. Most cities have been stratified according to the know-how of civilizations and require a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to understand the needs and aspirations of urban dwellers and therefore be able not only to solve their current problems but also to predict their future in cities.
The city is a living space, whatever the quality of the latter, it is a space that is born, evolves or even dies. It no longer appears as a body but rather as a corpus with multiple dimensions and is part of a plural temporality. This multiplicity is at the origin of many worries that different actors of the city know, all of whom are nevertheless in search of a good life the city. The expectations of city dwellers in terms of the environment are part of the strategy of leaders and designers. The quality of life is one of the essential factors of attractiveness of cities.
At present, living in a city with networks of all kinds, shared spaces and accelerated development, often results in malaise not always linked to basic needs, but expresses itself in a compelling need to create spaces and convivial spaces of support and socialization; to bring people together by allowing them to build relationships and closer bonds. It is only through such means that people can form emotionally rich relationships with spaces and places of the city, thereby enhancing social and psychological existence and well-being.
The seminar "Living the city between yesterday and tomorrow" calls on academics, professionals and stakeholders interested in the city to present and compare their work, which will be complementary. The multiple city cannot be the prerogative of a single specialty, and hence this meeting would unravel the cleavage existing between different disciplines.
The expected results will be of a methodological nature such as decision-making tools (strategic or technical), conceptual tools or feedback (evaluation sheets….)
The themes proposed:
Theme 1: Taking charge of the city's past.
The past of the city, this eternal present, constitutes the identity of the city. Taking charge of the heritage fits in history as well as in the prospective and constitutes the daily problematic of the managers of the city as well as that of the city dwellers.
Sub-themes:
- Theories, techniques and experiences;
- Policies, management and experience;
- Lives, practices and mode of transmission.
Theme 2: Environment and urban living environment.
The urban environment is constantly undergoing major and rapid changes (densification, aging, congestion, mineralization, ...) negatively affecting the quality of the living environment. Living well in the city is closely associated with taking charge of the urban environment.
Sub-themes:
- Natural risk management in urban areas;
- Preservation of natural resources and urbanization;
- Quality of the living environment;

Sub-themes:
- The transformation of the city by mobility;
- Practices, actors and governance of mobility.
Theme 4: Design and innovative techniques.
Solutions to architectural and urban problems require the fusion of advanced technologies through collaborative engineering and innovative approaches. The use of city data (4.0) is aimed at improvement and efficiency of public action and quality of life.
Sub-themes:
- Architecture and energetic design ;
- Security and insecurity ;
- Innovative materials;
- B.I.M. (Building Information Modeling)
Theme 5: The prospective city: stakes and challenges
Mankind expects more influx into the cities in the near future. This represents a huge challenge in how to build and manage these cities in the face of the varied needs and sophisticated desires of all practitioners in the city and its managers.
