The pre-colonial economy of India is portrayed by Indian historians as a golden age of prosperity. According to R.C. Dutt, the doyen of nationalist historians, “India in the eighteenth century was a great manufacturing as well as a great agricultural country”1 India had a ruling class whose extravagant life-style surpassed that of the European aristocracy. It had an industrial sector producing luxury goods which Europe could not match.2 Angus Maddison has substantiated how India was a leading economy of the world for centuries.3 With such a glorious business and economic history Indian also had strong management and economic principles. Western management as a concept, profession and a subject of study is nearly 100 years old, whereas Indian management principles traced to ancient times. Kautilya arthshastra is a living example of deep-rooted traditions of management. Teaching of management concepts in India were largely Western and were developed in the context of markets emerging as a dominant force. With the arrival of the information and the knowledge economy, many Indian companies have emerged as world class and have demonstrated their competitiveness at the global level. Hence, the concept of Indian Management has been gaining legitimacy, acceptance, and currency and Indian Management may edge as a distinct field of study. This seminar will focus on Indian Management models with following objectives -
- Create a platform for understanding the new subject on Indian Ethos introduced by AICTE in its Model syllabus.
- Presenting Relevance and applicability of Vedas and other Shastras in Indian Business Management.
- Provide a platform to discuss and present Indian Ethos and Models of Economy, Business and Management.
