The Internet of Energy (IoE) is defined as an integrated dynamic network infrastructure that interconnects the energy network with the Internet, thus allowing units of energy (locally generated, stored, and forwarded) to be dispatched when and where they are needed. IoE provides a real-time interface between the smart grid (locally distributed renewable energy resources) and a cloud of devices (electric vehicles, commercial and residential buildings, offices, electrical devices, appliances, etc) that can be plugged in and loaded from any source of electrical energy (solar panels, wind turbines, hydroelectric, nuclear or coal).
Book chapter contributions could cover the following themes, but we welcome any ideas for chapters beyond the below.
IoE in the Smart City
The Internet of Things (IoT) is advancing a new breed of Smart City. A Smart City exploits sustainable information and communication technologies to improve quality of life, health, education, and also the performance of urban services for citizens. A Smart City can be considered as the general umbrella category, in which other projects like smart buildings, smart homes, smart grids, smart automotives, and traffic management systems are also included. Energy efficient smart buildings, smart homes, smart grids, and other smart objects are paramount for the environment and for global sustainability, which in turn necessitates the development of an IoE in the energy sector.
IoE in Industrial Revolution
We are on the edge of what will be the next industrial revolution. The accelerated development of renewable energies will bring about entirely new ways of living and will likely also lead to a transformation of industry. The key here is the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) where the introduction of intelligent sensors, mission-critical communications, automation, artificial intelligence, and robotics will optimize industries ranging from mining and shipping to manufacturing, smart farming, 3D printing, and petrochemical operations.
Industries have already started to look into the implementation of IIoT, and the IoE will play a great role in improving the connectivity of devices and the performance of services with respect to social, environmental and global sustainability.
Need of ICT in Energy Sector
Information and communication technologies have been used to facilitate interactions between machines, between humans, and between machines and humans. As IoE enabled smart buildings, smart grids, smart homes, and traffic management systems are implemented, ICT for energy sector must be reconsidered to meet the changing requirements of the future. All components of the future energy system like grids, producers, consumers, storage, etc., can be connected on the basis of standardized open architecture.
We hope that this book issue will bring together solid research with real life applications, and that it can contribute to the development of the Industrial Internet of Things and other Smart City projects.
