TOPICS OF INTEREST
ICSLA 4 invites unpublished research from theoretical and applied perspectives that addresses sign language acquisition. Keynote presentations, organized sessions, and poster sessions reporting research using quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods will be included on such topics as:
- Acquisition of the phonetics / phonology / prosody / morphology / syntax / semantics / pragmatics / discourse of sign languages
- Sign language acquisition by all varieties of users, including those developing a sign language as a first language or a second language; bilingual acquisition of multiple sign languages or bimodal bilingual development; users of diverse sociolinguistic varieties
- Neurolinguistic / psycholinguistic studies of sign language acquisition
- Applied perspectives on sign language acquisition by children, such as children learning a sign language in educational contexts, language assessment (for researchers and for practitioners); use of sign languages in telepractice
- Communication planning in early intervention
- Spoken language development as relevant to questions of sign languages
- Research on methods for more effective teaching of sign languages as L1 or L2
WHO SHOULD SUBMIT
We encourage submissions from both RESEARCHERS studying sign language acquisition, and PRACTITIONERS working with deaf and hard of hearing children and their families. Our goal is to have open, clear communication that aims to improve both research and practice. Researchers, what results do you most want practitioners to be aware of? Practitioners, which research gaps would you most like to see filled? LET’S CHAT!
We strongly encourage submissions from deaf, hard of hearing, and disabled people, students, and emerging researchers and practitioners, especially those from underrepresented communities and countries.

SUBMITTING YOUR ABSTRACTS
Abstracts should be submitted through EasyChair at this link: https://easychair.org/my/conference?conf=icsla4#
-
Submissions will open on August 1, 2021
-
Video submissions and embedded links to video in written submissions should use external video hosting platforms (youtube, vimeo, etc.)
-
Submissions are due November 1, 2021 ***** DEADLINE EXTENDED to December 1, 2020*******
-
Notifications of acceptance will be sent in February, 2022
Abstracts can be submitted (and eventually presented) in one of the following languages: American Sign Language (ASL), International Sign (IS), or English.
-
Submissions will include a long abstract for review and a short abstract for publication
-
Full-length abstracts for presentations should be no more than 500 words on one page; one additional page can be used for examples/ figures/references. Video abstracts in ASL or IS should be no more than 5 minutes
-
Short abstracts for publication should be no more than 200 words or 2 minutes
-
We strongly encourage authors to use links to videos for presenting examples from a sign language rather than relying on glosses. To encourage this, we will not count space used for links toward the word limit on written abstracts.
-
Because video abstracts reveal the identity of the author(s), all abstracts, including those in written English, must include authors’ names
-
Authors may submit any number of abstracts (as sole author or co-author), but no more than 2 will be accepted as platform presentations (others may be accepted as posters)
Abstract Review Criteria
Abstracts will be reviewed by review committee members with expertise in the area of the abstract. Abstracts can be empirical, theoretical, and/or applied, and should describe unpublished work that makes connections to some area of sign language acquisition. The abstracts should clearly state the aims of the project and the means taken to achieve these aims. In addition, the abstracts should clearly state the novel contributions of the work to the respective field. We encourage the authors to also make translational connections in their abstracts.
We will ask authors to classify their submissions as either “research-based” or “practice-based”. Research-based submissions should:
- State the research question(s) and specific hypotheses
- Describe the methods used the address the question(s)
- Summarize the results to date (in-progress work is allowed)
- Summarize the implications of the findings for theory and/or practice
Practice-based submissions should:
- Describe an issue of practical importance related to the conference themes
- Present a novel strategy for addressing this issue in real-world contexts
- Discuss any available results/observations of the effectiveness and/or impact of this strategy
- Identify opportunities for future investigation/evaluation
