Indonesia has abundant natural resources, including mines, fishing, agriculture, and other forest products. However, its utilization creates environmental problems such as deforestation and pollution. One of the biological resources affected is the mangrove ecosystem. Indonesia is the country with the largest mangrove area in the world and has the highest biodiversity. There are about 3,489,140.68 Ha of mangroves in Indonesia, which covers 23% of the world's mangrove ecosystem. Throughout the coastal waters of Papua, the mangrove ecosystem is found and reaches 1,630,000 hectares, with 15% of it, or 25,971,760 hectares, found in Bintuni Bay.
The pressure on the mangrove ecosystem is very high, especially due to competition for land for aquaculture, agriculture, infrastructure, and tourism, and the high development of infrastructure in coastal areas, which is the main cause of declining forest areas, as reported from time to time. Thailand has lost 84% of its mangrove forests, the highest loss rate among any country, while Gading Beach, Guinea-Bissau, Tanzania, Mexico, Panama, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan, and the Philippines have each lost more than 60%. Indonesia itself has lost 900,000 hectares of mangrove in the last 30 years, which was previously 4.2 million hectares.
Comprehensive, collaborative, and integrated management is needed to preserve the potential and minimize threats. The development of the coast, which is the main threat to mangroves, must be well planned and evaluated. For example, the utilization of resources for tourism should be environmentally conscious. Conservation is one of the most effective ways to not only protect biodiversity but also control the utilization of marine and fishing resources by considering environmental principles to remain sustainable.
In 2023, the Postgraduate Program of the University of Papua will collaborate with the Teluk Bintuni Local Government to hold the 2nd International Seminar that focuses on the problems that occur in the mangrove ecosystem. The purpose of this conference is to promote the management of the mangrove ecosystem and other resources by building learning from the research results conducted both domestically and abroad for the protection, restoration, management, and utilization of mangrove forests and ecosystem services, and to identify ways to increase the utilization of the mangrove ecosystem for the well-being of the community.
