The 2nd International Conference on Art, Craft, Culture, and Design (ICON ARCCADE) 2021 is organized by the Faculty of Art and Design ITB. The conference will be preceded by a series of pre-events and held through online platforms on:
Wednesday - Thursday, 29 - 30 September 2021
09:00 AM - 04:00 PM (Western Indonesian Time, GMT +7)
The International Conference on Art, Craft, Culture, and Design (ICON ARCCADE) aims to gather high-quality research in art and design from all around the world, to create relevant and cutting-edge discussions within the scope, and to eventually inspire actors in both fields – even beyond – to make better contributions for the people and the planet. ICON ARCCADE is designed as a biannual event, with alternating smaller events in between, to accommodate the exciting dynamic of knowledge production in art, craft and design. It is a hub where academicians and practitioners meet to epistemologically examine how far the knowledge has expanded and how to leverage it. ICON ARCCADE’s short-term goals are to participate actively in advancing the research culture of art and design in Indonesia and to establish a solid regional network that can elevate South East Asian art, craft and design research in the global scene.
Submission Guidelines
Authors are kindly invited to submit abstracts via the EasyChair submission system below: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=iconarccade2021. Deadline for abstracts submission: 20 May 2021
Submissions must be original and should not have been published or under consideration for publication elsewhere. The abstract will be peer-reviewed and evaluated based on originality, technical and/or research content/depth, correctness, relevance to conference, contributions, and readability. Submissions will be chosen based on technical merit, interest, applicability, and how well they fit a coherent and balanced technical program.
The author who got accepted should submit full papers including results, tables, figures and references (format .pdf or .doc) through the EasyChair submission system. Further information will be available alongside the announcement of the accepted abstract.
List of Topics
The main theme of ICON ARCCADE 2021 stems from the declaration of the United Nation, which prioritised the growth for a sustainable economy, especially in developing countries, thus putting the creative economy in the centre. ICON ARCCADE 2021 aims to bring together academics, scientists, researchers and practitioners from Art and Design fields to exchange and share their experiences and research result related to several issues that impact the creative economy concerning United Nation Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Drawing on SDGs points’ challenges and potentials, the ICON ARCCADE 2021 theme focuses on: “Fostering Creative Economy for Sustainable Development”. The theme would be elaborated but not limited to six sub-themes, which would include some key ideas below:
1. Tradition and history as cultural asset
As SDG 4 aims to promote lifelong learning, the efforts to conserve and preserve tradition and history for future generations have gained more significance. We believe that humanity is built on valuable cultural capital that, in consequence, should contribute to our global advancement. More than artefacts, we are curious about why and how specific methods and materials are created and sustained in the past. The effort to mine this knowledge has led to the expansion of conservation and preservation methods in art and design. Although some of the studies aim to document and analyze these, we also welcome studies that stem from the practice of transforming traditions to make them relevant for the current time.
Keywords: Traditional Art, Art/Design History, Art & Design for Cultural Preservation & Conservation, Conservation and Preservation Methods in Art and Design, Transforming Traditions
2. Technology and environmental sustainability
Environmental deterioration and overpopulation are no longer just rumors. Several SDGs aim specifically to overcome these global issues. Designers and artists are at the heart of creativity, material production and industry. Consequentially, we are challenged to find new methods and technology to create sustainable production & industry, using renewable and green technology. We must significantly transform the linear model of production into a circular model, and to continuously work on closing the loop. We are interested to know how far art and design have played a part in this often interdisciplinary effort to implement technology (both high and low) in creating environmental sustainability.
Keywords: Material Production, Creative Industry, Sustainable Production Methods and Technology, Renewable Energy, Green Technology, High Tech vs Low Tech, Sustainable Consumption, Environmental Entrepreneurship, Sustainable Management for Art and Design, “Closing the Loop”, Circular Model of Production-Consumption, Reusable Materials
3. Creative economy & policy development
The creative economy covers various activities, such as production, distribution, and research & development. It also includes different actors, such as designers, artists, artisans, managers, gallerists, collectors, and researchers. To enable these aspects in the effort to reach SDGs, we need to gain more significance and create more impact by implementing good governance. Thus, a creative economy correlates heavily with and is supported by strong policymaking. Like in other fields, best practice can be sustained with sufficient studies that inform national and local policies. We want to know how this effort has been carried out and how the future is projected. We believe with more collaborative endeavor; outcomes can be measured better, and impacts can be amplified.
Keywords: Good Governance in Creative Economy, Art and Design Best Practice, Cultural Policy.
4. Human-centered & social interactions
Human-centered studies and their applications in art, craft and design have continued to expand, initiating many interdisciplinary disciplines. It is unavoidable for any artist, crafter, and designer to use interdisciplinary approaches to understand deeply their user perspectives. Even so, we still We wonder how to close this gap between knowledge stemming from studies that continue to advance and the reality that continues to grow more complex.
Keywords: Digital Technology, Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data Analytic, User Interface and User Experience (UI/UX), Ergonomic Design, Visual Perception, Emotional Design, Psychology of Art, Creativity, Neuro-aesthetics, Design Ethnography.
5. Community for resilience and well-being
One of the key characteristics of postmodern practice in art and design in the centrality of community in creation. High-touch, locally source, and culturally rich practices in participatory and community-based art and design have developed over the past decades. Interdisciplinary approaches are often applied to understand the complexity of social problems and to inspire solutions that center on people within the living contexts of their communities. Indonesia has put serious attention on SDGs that directly impact communities, to the extent that we adapt them into Village SDGs. We are at awe of our communal power and potential to bounce back better than ever after persisting disasters and discords. More than ever before, the pandemic has prompted us to place more significance on the need for individual and collective well-being, connectivity, and resilience. Innovations in art and design, when collaboratively led by and with the people to empower them, can serve to build and sustain resilient communities.
Keywords: Participatory Methods, Community-based Art and Design, Interdisciplinary Approach in Community Projects, Complex Social Problems, Community Design Management and Education System, Design Thinking (Co-design, Co-production, Collaboration), Community Empowerment, Art and Design for Health and Recovery, Collective Resilience, “Bounce Back Better”.
6. Recontextualizing the urban ecosystems
Globally, the numbers of cities are increasing. Progress in urban environments sometimes poses more problems between people and the surroundings and is specifically highlighted on SDG 11. We have witnessed how grassroot movements become the soul of every city, breathing life into the urban dynamics and its transformative potentials. Studies in the role of art and design in urban life and system, place making, biodiversity, and infrastructure give way to healthier, stronger, sustainable, and more resilient cities.
