In July 2018, the annual Symposium of the IASS – International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures – will take place in Boston, an American hub of academics and innovation. Hosted at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the symposium aims to bring together leading designers and researchers working in the fields of structural engineering and architecture from around the world.
The symposium theme, Creativity in Structural Design, celebrates work in the built environment that pushes beyond the status quo and synthesizes across disciplines to solve important problems of today and the future. Empowered by recent advances in computation, materials, and fabrication, creative structural design is expanding possibilities for shell and spatial structures.
IASS 2018 Boston will take place from July 16 to July 20 on the campus of MIT, with the iconic shell structure of Kresge Auditorium as the principal venue.
Submission Guidelines
The IASS 2018 organizers encourage the participation of designers, engineers, architects, researchers, and all who are interested in creative ways to explore structural design. We especially welcome papers to be presented and discussed during the symposium that reflect on the symposium theme. Additionally, young practitioners and scholars are welcome to participate in the Hangai Prize competition that recognizes outstanding submissions from participants under the age of 30. Papers will be written and presented in English.
In recognition of the diverse backgrounds and perspectives of prospective authors, the IASS 2018 Symposium will accept two distinct paper types: short papers, which are 2-4 pages in length, and long papers, which are up to 8 pages in length. Authors will be asked to specify their paper type during the time of abstract submission (although abstracts for both short and long papers should be one page maximum).
One-page abstract submissions, originally due January 15, have been extended to January 31, 2018, and must be uploaded to the Symposium’s EasyChair website to be considered. Authors must use the IASS 2018 Abstract Template (available here) for abstracts. Abstracts may be submitted as part of organized sessions by IASS Working Groups or other individuals, or as individual contributions. In either case, authors will be asked to specify whether their submission is intended to be part of an organized session and about their submission’s general topics during the submission process.
All one-page abstracts will be subject to a single-blind peer review by the Symposium’s Scientific Committee. Authors of submitted abstracts that are accepated after the peer review process are guaranteed participation in the IASS 2018 Symposium if they submit properly formatted full papers by the deadline of April 2, 2018 and register for the Symposium by the same date.
The one exception to the abstract and paper submission cycle is for authors who would like to apply for the Hangai Prize described above. These authors are asked to submit full long papers to the Symposium’s paper management system by January 31, 2018. Authors must use the IASS 2018 Paper Template (available here), and papers may not exceed 8 pages in length. Hangai Prize submitting authors do not need to also submit separate abstracts to the Symposium. If their papers are not selected for the Hangai Prize, they will automatically be considered for the Symposium as a regular submission.
Before publication of papers in the Proceedings of the IASS Symposium 2018, the Editors and Secretariat must receive a signed Copyright Declaration (available here), which can be uploaded through the Symposium’s EasyChair system.
