The Committee for Integrated History and Philosophy of Science invites the submission of individual paper and poster abstracts for “&HPS8”, the 8th conference in the series Integrated History and Philosophy of Science. We seek contributions that genuinely integrate the historical and philosophical analysis of science (i.e., the physical sciences, life sciences, cognitive sciences, and social sciences), or discuss methodological issues surrounding the prospects and challenges of integrating history and philosophy of science. For information about Integrated History and Philosophy of Science and previous conferences, see http://integratedhps.org/en/
Recent scholarship in history and especially in philosophy of science has shown that scientific practice is best be characterized as a pluralistic endeavor. Might the field of integrated history and philosophy of science (HPS) also need a pluralistic framework for the analysis of the full sweep of science in past and present, combining philosophical analysis and historical evaluation of science? Can we characterize the Integrated HPS community as a community of solvers of what Fujimura (1996) calls “doable problems”? How might we build disciplinary knowledge without disciplinary methodological unification? The organizers especially welcome contributions investigating problem-centered and pluralistic methodologies for integrated HPS. The organizers also welcome submissions in any area of integrated HPS.
Submission Guidelines
The following paper categories are welcome:
- Full papers
- Posters
Please note that &HPS8 does not run parallel sessions. Hence, given the number of slots available, we regret that we cannot accept symposia submissions.
&HPS8 will feature a Poster Forum as a place to share work that fits in a poster format.
It is possible to submit a paper and a poster, but only one may be presented at the conference if both are accepted.
All proposals for papers should contain a title and a long abstract (900-1100 words; significantly shorter abstracts will not be considered). Proposals for posters should also contain a title and an abstract. The poster abstract length should be approximately 500 words, not including references. Poster presenters will be invited to give a short flash talk on their topic.
To submit, please prepare your abstracts of papers and posters for blind review and save your abstract as a PDF file. PLEASE INDICATE AT THE TOP OF YOUR SUBMISSION WHETHER IT IS FOR A PAPER OR A POSTER.
We have an ongoing commitment to fostering diversity and equality in our programs. Submissions from members of underrepresented groups are particularly welcome!
