2nd Call for Papers:
The High Desert Linguistics Society (HDLS) at the University of New Mexico is pleased to announce our Second Call for Papers for our thirteenth biennial conference, HDLS 13. The conference will take place November 9-11, 2018 at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
HDLS 13 will focus on cognitive, functional, typological linguistics, and sociolinguistics. We also welcome the submission of papers that shed light on all linguistic issues from the point of view of neighboring disciplines, including, but not limited to, Psychology, Anthropology, Education, and Computer Science.
Abstract Submission Guidelines
Applicants can submit abstracts for presentations, posters, and themed panels. Abstracts for presentations and posters must be no more than 300 words (ASL submission, 2-4 minute video). The following paper categories are welcome:
- Presentation: Presentations will be 20 minutes, plus 10 minutes of discussion.
- Poster: Applicants selected for posters will be notified with the specific guidelines for the poster.
- Themed Panel: Panels will consist of three (3) presenters. Each presenter will have 20 minutes, for a total of 60 minutes, plus 30 minutes of discussion for the panel as a whole. Presenters interested in this format are responsible for deciding who will be part of the suggested panel. Only one document should be submitted per panel. The document should include the proposed panel topic (300 words; 2-4 minutes), and how each presenter will contribute to it (500 words in total; 4-6 minutes).
All abstracts must be original and not simultaneously submitted to another conference. Abstracts can be submitted in English, Spanish, and American Sign Language (ASL) in video. Applicants may submit one single authored and one co-authored abstract, not including participation in a themed panel.
Formatting (English or Spanish):
- For presentations and posters, abstracts must not exceed 300 words (not including examples, data, or references).
- Abstracts must be in pdf format, 12-point font, and submitted via easychair (https://easychair.org/cfp/HDLS13).
- Please do NOT include any personal information (name, affiliation, and email address) in your submission .
Formatting (ASL):
- Abstracts must not exceed four (4) minutes (individual videos of each presenter in a themed panel must not exceed six (6) minutes).
- Please include references either at the end of your video or as a separate PDF document, as applicable.
- While your image in the video reveals your identity as the author, please refrain from including explicit identifying information (e.g., name, affiliation, etc.).
- Please upload video submissions to Dropbox or Google Drive and send a shared link to your file(s) to hdls@unm.edu. (Do not send YouTube links, unless your name/affiliation has been completely removed from the channel).

The conference will be held at the Student Union Building (SUB) at the University of New Mexico (UNM).
The conference reception will be held at Hodgin Hall at the UNM campus at November 10, 2018 (Meal will be provided. Details to be announced.).

Book Launch + Alumni Event
On Thursday, November 8 (the day before the first day of HDLS 13), the Linguistics Community at UNM will be hosting a reception to celebrate bilingualism and New Mexican Spanish. The reception will include an alumni social gathering and the book launch for Bilingualism in the Community, by Rena Torres Cacoullos & Catherine Travis. We hope you can join us for this event as well as the conference!
