Submission deadline | March 6, 2020 |
The General Donald R. Keith Memorial Capstone Conference is a forum for undergraduate students of systems engineering and related disciplines to present their capstone work to professionals, scholars, clients, and fellow students from other colleges and universities. The conference also provides an opportunity for the students to prepare and submit a paper for scholarly review, revision, and possible publication. The conference invites and attracts undergraduates to compete for conference presentation awards along with cadets from the Department of Systems Engineering at the US Military Academy. This is a regional conference of the Society for Industrial and Systems Engineering (SISE), which publishes the conference proceedings. Top papers are also published in the Society's scholarly journal, the Industrial and Systems Engineering Review.
Submission Guidelines
All papers must be original and not simultaneously submitted to another journal or conference. Papers are welcome that describe the authors' work in a senior capstone project in the area of systems or industrial engineering, engineering management, systems and decision sciences, or operations research, with special emphasis on novel approaches, new discoveries, and innovative applications. The faculty advisor should be included as the last author. Papers must be no more than six pages long. The submission date is 6 March 2020; because of the tight timeline late submissions cannot be accepted. Papers will be reviewed by two anonymous faculty members from the USMA Department of Systems Engineering and returned with comments to the authors by 23 March. A revised paper is due by 6 April. Papers accepted after a second review will appear in the conference proceedings. If a paper is not accepted, the abstract will still appear in the proceedings, and the authors are still invited to present at the conference. Submission of only an abstract is sufficient to present.
Full details on submissions are available at the conference website: https://www.westpoint.edu/academics/academic-departments/systems-engineering/general-donald-r-keith-memorial-capstone-conference. Becasue of the lack of time for editing, papers and abstract must use the Word templates provided without modifying them in any way.
Slide presentations should be submitted by noon (1200 EDT) on 29 April to enable them to loaded onto the computers in the presentation rooms.
Conference Tracks
Decision Analysis (DA). This track deals with evaluating complex non-repetitive decision opportunities by examining values, uncertain variables, preferences, and alternatives.
Modeling and Simulation (MS). This track deals with modeling methods and applications for representing static or dynamic characteristics of systems in order to support effective systems design or improvement.
Modeling and Simulation for Defense Applications (MSDA). This track deals with modeling methods and applications for representing static or dynamic characteristics of systems in order to support effective systems design or improvement, specifically for military applications.
Problem Solving (PS). This track features projects that apply systems engineering principles and processes to solving problems. Emphasis is on correctly defining the problem, generating possible solutions, then choosing and implementing the best one.
Process Modeling and Analysis (PMA). This track deals with methods and applications addressing the modeling of partially ordered activities to achieve a goal for systems existing in the real-world (process analysis) or not (processing engineering), to support effective design or systems improvement.
Process Optimization (Lean). This track features projects which utilize techniques to establish or adjust a process to optimize some specific parameters without violating some constraint. The most common goals are minimizing cost and maximizing throughput or efficiency.
Project and Engineering Management (PEM). This track features applications of engineering principles to operations, project management and business practice. Presentations include engineering surrounding product development, manufacturing, construction design engineering, industrial engineering, technology, production, or any other field that employs personnel who perform an engineering function.
Systems Design (SD). This track showcases projects from engineering and problem solving that feature significant levels of systems design. This includes notable examples of requirements specification, functional analysis, systems architecture, model-based systems engineering, or the use of modeling and simulation in the design process.
Systems Design for Defense Applications (SDDA). This track showcases projects from defense- related projects that feature significant levels of systems design. This includes notable examples of requirements specification, functional analysis, systems architecture, model-based systems engineering, or the use of modeling and simulation in the design process.
At the conference's concluding banquet, awards will be given for the best presentation in each track. The judges will be panels of experts from academia, industry, and government outside of USMA. There will also be an award for the best submitted paper, selected by SISE from papers nominated by the reviewers.
