Advances in Cement Research is pleased to announce that a themed issue on green binders for engineering applications is planned for 2018.
Global production of Portland cement is 3.5 billion tonnes per year and, as a consequence of its popularity, cement production accounts for approximately 7% of global CO2 emissions. Reducing this carbon footprint is a key aim of the cement industry and of researchers worldwide, leading to the development
of a number of ‘green binders’. Many solutions have been proposed, from replacing the cement with conventional supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) such as y ash and ground-granulated blast furnace slag , via the use of novel SCMs and industrial byproducts such as rice husk ash or calcined clays, through to the development of binders not based on Portland cement, for example geopolymers or calcium sulfoaluminate cements.
However, there is still considerable research needed to demonstrate, with con dence, that green binders offer comparable lifetime performance
to Portland cement. Furthermore, there is a need for more nuanced environmental assessment than just embodied carbon per unit mass. Improved sustainability can be also achieved by use of locally sourced materials or by developing more ef cient, durable structures.
This themed issue invites submissions on any aspect of green binders. Topics to be discussed could include, but are not limited to:
*non-Portland cement binders
*nanotechnology and green binder materials
*performance testing for green binders
*analysis and characterisation of green binder cement materials and engineering applications
*lifecycle assessment of green binders
*Failure mechanism at elevated temperatures when subject to multi-axial stresses.
Engineering practitioners and researchers engaged in any of these regular topics are invited to submit 200-word informative summaries by 31st May 2017. If accepted, the deadline for papers is 30th November 2017.
