Twelfth conference of
EUROPEAN RESEARCHERS IN DIDACTICS OF BIOLOGY
ERIDOB 2018

The Academic Committee invites researchers in Didactics of Biology/Biology Education to take part in the Twelfth Conference of European Researchers in Didactics of Biology (ERIDOB). The aim of the conference is to give researchers the opportunity to present and discuss their research work and results. The Conference will be held at the Zaragoza University, Spain, from July 2nd to July 6th 2018.
PLEASE make sure that your proposal reflects research in Biology Education. Proposals dealing with general science education research will not be considered.
Contributions should fit into one of the following strands within Biology Education:
1. Students’ conceptions and conceptual change
2. Students’ interest and motivation
3. Students’ values, attitudes and decision-making
4. Scientific thinking, nature of science and argumentation
5. Teaching strategies and teaching environments
6. Teaching and learning with educational technology
7. Environmental education
8. Health education
9. Social, cultural, and gender issues
10. Practical work and field work
11. Research methods and theoretical issues
Types of contributions
Papers may be presented as an oral contribution, a poster, or a symposium with at least 3 papers. In the case of a symposium, a minimum of three different countries should be represented.
Proposals for an oral or poster contribution should include the following (as outlined in EasyChair):
1. Author information
2. Title and abstract (400 words maximum)
3. Keywords
4. Preferred strand
5. Type of presentation (oral, poster).
6. A paper including: title, biological topic, theoretical background or rationale, key objectives, research design and methodology, findings, conclusions and reference list (1000 words maximum). To ensure blind peer reviewing, please DO NOT include the authors’ names with the paper.
Proposal for a symposium should include the following (as outlined in EasyChair):
1. Author information
2. Title and abstract (400 words maximum)
3. Keywords
4. Preferred strand
5. Type of presentation (oral, poster).
6. All the papers, each in the format outlined above for an oral contribution, should be submitted as one document. Include title and abstract for each paper in this document (to be presented in the booklet). To ensure blind peer reviewing, please DO NOT include the authors’ names with the paper.
Deadlines for ERIDOB 2018 are:
2. Final submission deadline: 31 October 2017
3. Notification of review results: 1 February 2018
4. Opening of early-bird registration: 15 February 2018
5. Early-bird registration closes: 15 March 2018
6. Registration closes: 15 May 2018
7. Deadline of submission of papers for conference book: 31 October 2018
Proposals received after 31 of October 2018 will not be considered
Proposals will be reviewed under the following criteria:
1. Research: Is the proposal concerned with research in biology education?
2. Subject / problem: What is the research problem or question? What is the rationale for the study? What is the theoretical framework?
3. Design and methodology: What is the design of the study? Are the research methods clearly described and appropriate?
4. Data analysis and findings: Are the data clearly presented? Is there consistency between data and findings?
5. General interest: Is the contribution of interest to European researchers in the field?
The standards, in terms of quality, will be the same for oral and poster presentations. The following criteria will be applied:
For oral presentations (including a presentation at a symposium)
2. Data should be available.
3. Content should be of high interest and/or relevance.
4. Specific content should not have been presented or published elsewhere.
For poster presentations
1. Work may be under development.
2. Findings may be tentative or not yet available.
3. Content may be of less interest and/or relevance.
4. Similar work may have been presented (but not published) elsewhere.
Some important rules to keep in mind
The following are eligible to attend ERIDOB 2018:
- All people who submit a proposal on time, including co-authors, regardless of the outcome of the review process.
- Research students being supervised by any of the presenters.
- Students at the host university who are actively involved in biology education research.
No participant may submit more than one first authored paper. The first author is assumed to present the paper unless otherwise stated. No participant may present more than once during the conference.
The first authors/contact persons of accepted proposals will receive the ERIDOB conference guidelines for papers and the registration form.
Please note that only proposals that on the moment of submission have not been published in an international journal are eligible. The Academic Committee must be notified if a paper submitted to the conference has also been submitted or accepted for publication elsewhere.
The conference language will be English.
