The Institute of Philosophy, the Department of Legal Theory, the Centre for Law, Language and Philosophy, and the Interdisciplinary Centre for Ethics at the Jagiellonian University welcome submissions for the workshop on “Evidence in Law and Ethics” to be held on 4-5th April 2019 in Kraków (Poland). In addition to the keynote speakers, there will be space for a number of scholars who will be chosen to present their work at the Workshop. The choice will be made by means of a blind selection process.
List of Topics
- Epistemic risk and the role of non-epistemic values in ethical and legal evidential reasoning.
- Reasonable doubt, higher-order evidence, statistical evidence, evidentiary thresholds in law and ethics.
- Models of evidential reasoning, standards of proof, and evidence-based heuristics in law and ethics.
- The concept of testimony in ethical vs legal contexts.
- Epistemology of legal (esp. court) disagreement.
- The ethics of belief of laymen, experts, lawyers and the judicial system.
Submission Guidelines
Papers published prior to the Workshop are not eligible. If you would like to participate, please submit your abstract (no more than 500 words long and written in English) by //tu będzie link do CfP na Easychair//. The deadline for submissions is February 24, 2019. Abstracts should be formatted for blind review and free of personal and institutional information.
We shall inform authors by March 3, 2019 and successful authors must submit drafts of the papers or detailed handouts by March 31, 2019, since this is a pre-read workshop. Papers should be suitable for a 20 minute presentation. We plan a post-workshop publication. The final papers (maximum length 8,000 words), prepared according to guidelines provided during the Workshop, should be sent by the end of May, 2019.
