This year’s conference theme, “Occupational Hazards: Writing Center Labor, Self-Care, and
Reflection,” focuses on a wide range of topics including wellness in the writing center, writing
center as labor site, writing center best practices, writing center history (local, regional, national,
international), training and professional development, as well as assessment and the changing
face of writing center scholarship. ECWCA will feature two keynotes and an additional day of
presentations that will run through the afternoon of Sunday, March 25 th . Please check out the

graduate tutors/consultants. Deadline for proposals for the 2018 ECWCA Conference will be
November 17th, 2017. We welcome presenters to submit proposals for panel discussions,
training sessions, workshops, and roundtables. The proposal form also asks presenters to note
audio-visual needs. All rooms are smart classrooms. We will do our best to accommodate all
audio-visual requests.
Call for Proposals
Recent writing center scholarship has focused on the idea of better understanding writing center
work, particularly from the perspective of new directors and administrators (Jackson, McKinney,
& Caswell, 2016), as well as from consultant experiences with their own stress and mental health
(Degner et al., 2015), but how does the idea of understanding and showcasing the labor of the
center staff and tutors solidify our understanding of what we do as well as the resources and
education that it takes to do it?
We invite panels that explore these ideas through various research questions, including (but not
limited to):
- What does “wellness” mean in the center or for various center constituents?
- What role does self care play in training and center maintenance?
- How does center research support self care or self reflection?
- How can mindfulness be practiced in the writing center?
- What does center history (local, regional, national, international) tell us about occupational hazards in the center?
- Can writing center labor be assessed?
- How can self care be assessed to strengthen training and scholarship?
- How do WCAs create sustainable program development?
- How is diversity in the writing center facilitated and sustained?
- How can we support consultants of color within writing center work?
- How can we train and encourage a culture of mentorship in writing center work?
- From different perspectives, what are some of the challenges of writing center work?
The ECWCA conference is also interested in engaging presentations centered on race in Writing
Center Studies work, please consider submitting to the Digital Black Lit (Literatures/Literacies)
and Composition (DBLAC) sponsored panel for the 2018 conference. Interested applicatants
should identify submissions to the DBLAC panel at the top of their proposals, in the heading.
DBLAC is an inter-institutional network of Black-identified graduate students in fields related to
the study of language, literacies, and literature at US institutions. DBLAC aims to create and
cultivate spaces in which its members might share, discuss, and exchange their work and
