Proposals for papers, colloquia, and roundtables are invited for a multisectoral conference on Communicating Sustainability at Glasgow University on 6th and 7th September 2022.
Communicating Sustainability will bring together community groups, educationalists, policy-makers, researchers, and professionals to discuss how social and environmental aspects of sustainability are understood and represented within specific sectors. There will be a series of presentations in themed sessions, but these are to be seen as catalysts to wider discussion and contributions from the floor as well as to networking and future planning over coffee and lunch. We are calling for expressions of interest or proposals from people or groups who wish to make (short) presentations about their own experiences of working on issues of ‘sustainability’ and to open up discussions in the themed sessions.
The event in Glasgow will be held in parallel with events in Brazil and the United States and there will be opportunities to take part in activities across the three sites.
If you wish to make a short presentation, you can submit an expression of interest or a more formal proposal for either an individual presentation or a colloquium/roundtable on a specific topic, including three or four connected papers.
On the second day of the conference, there will be Open Discussions where all participants can come together to tackle areas of communal interest and concern. If you would like to facilitate any of the Open Discussions, please let us know. For a better idea of how the event will be structured, please read our provisional Glasgow Hub Conference Programme here.
Note: A number of fee-waivers and contributions to costs will be available for non-academics and community groups who wish to make presentations. Please do indicate whether you will be seeking a fee waiver and/or a contribution to costs when you submit your contribution.
How to take part at the Glasgow Hub
How you make your presentations is up to you, but we would suggest you address a few of the following questions in some way:
- What does ‘sustainability’ mean within your area?
- How does this view of ‘sustainability’ inform practice in your area?
- Are these views and practices properly represented and respected in public policy, the media, and education?
- What are the challenges and successes in discussing issues of ‘sustainability’ with other sectors, with different views and priorities?
There are planned group sessions in the following areas, but proposals and expressions of interest are welcome in other areas also. All accepted proposals for individual papers will be assigned to a group discussion on a common theme:
- Civil Society and influencing policy
- Sustainability and tourism
- Sustainability in (social) media
- Sustainable energies and their effects
- Funding and promoting sustainability
- Sustaining communities and cultures on the edge
- Sustainability in children’s literature
- Sustainability in primary and secondary education
- Sustainability and the university
- Sustainability and the Arts
- Interdisciplinary research and participatory action research
To submit a proposal or an expression of interest, please provide:
- For an individual presentation: a title and a 150-300 word abstract
- For a colloquium: a title, a 150-300 word general abstract or description of the colloquium, and a minimum of three paper abstracts
- For a roundtable event: the details of at least three speakers (300-500 words for each speaker).
