We are pleased to announce that the 11th International Corpus Linguistics Conference 2021 will be held online via the University of Limerick, Ireland, from the 13th – 17th of July 2021.
The International Corpus Linguistics Conference is a biennial conference that explores corpus approaches to language research.
This conference encompasses discourse studies, technology-mediated communication, language acquisition, literature, lexicography, speech, sociolinguistics and computational linguistics, among others.
The theme of this year's conference is Corpus Linguistics in Changing Times: Challenges and Solutions.
Please note: We hope to run CL2021 as an on-campus conference but in the event that this cannot happen, it will run as an online conference.
Submission Guidelines
We invite proposals across the categories: full papers, posters and panels. All proposals will be peer-reviewed by the conference programme committee. The conference will feature six thematic streams and a general programme. The thematic strands are as follows:
List of Topics
- Strand 1 – Corpus Methods and Innovations: Innovations in Corpus Design, Analysis and Annotation Tools; Critical Reflections on Corpus Methods; Advances in Quantitative and Qualitative Approaches to Analysing Corpora; Innovations in Statistics for CL.
- Strand 2 – Corpus Linguistics, Pragmatics and Discourse in Context: Corpus Approaches to Discourse Analysis, Conversation Analysis, Critical Discourse Analysis; Corpus Pragmatics; Historical Corpus Linguistics; CL and Real-World Contexts e.g. Forensic Linguistics, Media Discourse, Healthcare Discourse, Classroom Discourse; Workplace Discourse.
- Strand 3 – Corpus Linguistics and Applied Linguistics: Learner Corpus Research; CL and Second Language Acquisition; Data-Driven Learning; CL for Materials Development; CL and Teacher Education; CL and Lexicography.
- Strand 4 – Corpus Linguistics, Literature, Texts and Register: CL and Register Studies; Corpus Stylistics; CL and Literary Linguistics; CL and Translation Studies.
- Strand 5 – Corpus Linguistics and Speech: CL Speech Technology; CL and Multimodality; Spoken Corpora; Corpus Phonology.
- Strand 6 – Corpus Linguistics and Sociolinguistics: CL and Language Change; Language Varieties and Variation; CL and Minority Language Studies.
Papers focusing on sign language and languages other than English are particularly welcome.
Pre-Conference Workshops
For pre-conference workshops, we invite proposals for either half day or full day events. Proposals should be 1,000 words for a half day or 1,500 words for the full-day, excluding word count for references. They should also provide details on whether the workshop will need a computer lab or any other technical requirements. Pre-conference proposals should be sent directly to the conference email account: academicCL2021@ul.ie.
General programme
For the general programme, we invite contributions across 3 categories of proposals: full papers, posters and panels. All proposals will be peer-reviewed.
Full papers (20 minutes, plus 10 minutes Q&A)
Submissions should present either complete research or research in progress where at least some substantial results have been achieved. Work in progress which has yet to produce results should be submitted as a poster abstract. Abstracts will be 300 words. References are not included in the 300-word limit and reference lists must use APA 7th Referencing Style.
Posters
Posters can present either results of completed research or work in progress. Abstracts will be 300 words. References are not included in the 300-word limit and reference lists must use APA 7th Referencing Style. We especially welcome poster abstracts that (a) report on innovative research that is in its early phases, or (b) report on new software or corpus data resources. Posters should be printed in portrait, A0 size.
Panels
Panels during the main conference offer an opportunity to group related papers together on a focused topic to allow for extended discussions. Panels will be allocated 1 hour 40 minutes. It is the responsibility of the Panel Organiser to curate the papers for the panel and to submit it all as one abstract. The panel abstract should include:
- an introduction specifying the relationship between the papers;
- a summary list of the details of the individual presentations: paper titles; presenter(s) names and affiliations; and
- an abstract of 300 words for each paper in the panel presentation.
References are not included in the 300-word limit and reference lists must use APA 7th Referencing Style.
