CROATIAN APPLIED LINGUISTICS SOCIETY
35th International Conference
LANGUAGE IN THE DIGITAL ENVIRONMENT
9th – 11th September 2021
Osijek (Croatia)
First Call
Faced with a turbulent period of pandemic that has forced many of us to turn to digital means of communication, we have decided to dedicate XXXV. CALS International Scientific Conference to the use of language in the digital environment. This is a unique opportunity to look at the possibilities and limitations of electronic media and the role of language in shaping both non-linguistic and virtual reality. Many studies to date have found that patterns of human behavior are very often related to communication patterns and vice versa. Modern society is changing under the influence of increasingly diverse digital communication channels such as email, video conferencing platforms, online information portals and social networks. Information technologies enable an increasing flow of information, but with the exponential increase in their amount, the human cognitive-linguistic apparatus often encounters difficulties in their processing, which explains the growing need to use artificial intelligence. The emergence of fake news, the perpetuation of certain ideological patterns, changes within individual languages under the influence of English as a global language of new digital communication tools, the growing influence of visual elements in linguistic communication may all be seen as a reflection of the interplay between the cognitive and linguistic aspects of human communication. At the same time, the diversity of opportunities provided by information technology enables increasingly creative approaches to teaching (foreign) languages, translation and communication in general. Noticing the great influence that language has on the understanding of reality, on the correlation of traditional and modern communication channels and on the acquisition of new knowledge, we intend to present cognitive-linguistic, pragmatic, sociolinguistic, translatological and glottodidactic research, as well as other types of research, especially interdisciplinary, which are especially important in illuminating the interplay of linguistic, extralinguistic and virtual reality.
