Homecoming: Past, Present, Future
The 17th Annual Alumni of Color Conference invites you to submit a proposal to present at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. We welcome all scholars, researchers, practitioners, policymakers, students, activists, organizers, artists, and educators interested in sharing their work with an affirming community at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE). AOCC 2019 aims to inspire and transform education by convening attendees committed to interrogating the roots of structural inequities, various methods of resistance, and tools to deconstruct oppressive systems, as they pertain to all people and, in particular, to Communities of Color.
General Information
Submission Guidelines
The following submission types are welcome:
- Workshops provide the opportunity for individuals or groups to facilitate in-depth sessions devoted to a single topic or theme. Workshops may be organized for groups of different sizes and may be presented in a format of the presenter's choosing, as long as the session is interactive.
- Group Presentation or Panels provide the opportunity for individuals or groups to present a scholarly paper or project, or practice-based initiative. Individual presentations will be grouped by topic for each session, and each panelist/group will be allotted time to present their work as part of a facilitated discussion. Note in your application whether your intent is to bring a full panel of speakers (i.e. at least 3 speakers) or if you would like to participate in a panel of other presenters arranged by AOCC planners.
- Workshops with Youth as Co-Presenters provide the opportunity for individuals or groups to facilitate sessions devoted to a single topic, theme, or project based initiative. If you are an individual or group inviting youth, please submit under “Workshops with Youth as Co-Presenters”.
- Artwork provides the opportunity to showcase creative work that illustrates the lived experiences of Students of Color from their own perspectives and critically engages issues of race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality, ability status, immigration status, and/or other forms of intersecting identities.
- Screening or Performance provide the opportunity for artists to engage in critical dialogue related to issues of issues of race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality, ability status, immigration status and/or other forms of intersecting identities. Pieces should range from 7 to 10 minutes and will be performed in rapid succession with a Q&A session to follow.
- Other: if you feel like your proposal idea does not fit any of the categories above, please feel free to submit under the category of "Other" clearly articulating how your work aligns with the mission and themes of AOCC 2019. Note in your application how much time (up to 60 minutes), physical space, additional support you will need, and your proposed use of the time allotted with detail.
Guiding Questions and Sub-Themes
We invite you to consider the following topics and questions or propose your own as it relates to the education sector. We welcome interpretations of Past, Present, Future, Storytelling, and Community themes broadly. While some proposals may address each theme or sub-theme equally, it is acceptable for proposals to focus deeply on one/several of these topics as opposed to all.
General questions: How do we create a welcoming home for Students of Color in educational spaces?
- How do we look to education in the past to understand the present and guide us to the future?
- What issues are we currently experience in education?
- How can we ensure that the future of education in inclusive and welcoming for all?
Storytelling
- How is storytelling a source of power, healing, and/or transformation?
- How do individual stories mosaic into collective narratives or understandings of who we are in policies or institutions?
- How has your story of self influenced your work trajectory?
- How is storytelling evolving the work you are doing?
- How do your global identities and/or international experiences shape your approach to education?
Community
- How is your work or research shaping the future of historically marginalized communities?
- How do you perceive your responsibility to use your privilege to leverage the voices of often unheard, invisibilized, and silenced communities?
- How do you see your work influencing resource allocation for Students of Color and/or historically marginalized communities?
- How can an individual’s location shape the ways they interact with, relate to, or influence the world?
- How might we collectively build our power to create future learning spaces for the next generation?
Selection Criteria
We are looking for work that...
- Articulates a clear purpose with define outcomes for attendees and/or a targeted audience.
- Is thought-provoking and has the potential to stimulate active engagement of participants.
All submissions must include goals, proposed activities, expected audience size, and proposed length of time (up to 60 minutes) as well as indicate prior experience in conducting such a session (if any).
Please make explicit how your session will meaningfully integrate one or more theme(s) mentioned above and will deepen attendees’ ability to act in support of social justice in education.
