3faces: Three faces of fintech in HCI Workshop |
Website | http://bit.ly/three-faces |
Submission deadline | February 12, 2019 |
Acceptance notification | March 1, 2019 |
This workshop aims to draw together a deep and cross-cutting discussion about the contemporary development of fintech, considering how it is interwoven into wider sociotechnical practices, and the implications for designing responsible human-computer interactions.
We aim to stimulate productive discussion at the workshop through the lens of three ‘faces of fintech’: the technological, the human, and the infrastructural. Each of these ‘faces’ will provide the basis for a long-form discussion at the workshop. We therefore invite participants to submit position papers that put their thoughts and/or recent work into conversation with one of these discussions. The format for contributions is flexible, but it is critical that contributions to the workshop are put in conversation with at least one of the ‘faces of fintech’ outlined in the proposal, provoking new connections and possibilities This could mean placing existing research in conversation with the themes and topics in a case (or across cases), or simply providing a commentary on the issues raised in the workshop proposal. We hope this approach will generate stimulating discussion, and a space for participants to gain a wider and more interconnected view of their work in this space.
Submission Guidelines
All papers must be original and not simultaneously submitted to another journal or conference. We are seeking position papers that explore interactions in fintech along our three main topics.
We invite submission of POSITION PAPERS to this workshop. Position papers between 3 and 6 pages (excluding references, in CHI Extended Abstract format, as a PDF will be accepted and they should relate to an ongoing research or experience. Position papers will be presented by the authors in the workshop. Papers will form the basis of discussion at the workshop. Each topic at the workshop will consist of an opening provocation from one of the organisers to set the scene, then authors will then have the opportunity to respond and add to this provocation in relation to their own work, before opening out discussion to the floor. We hope this approach will generate stimulating discussion, and space for participants to gain a wider and more interconnected view of their work in this space.
At least one author of each accepted position paper must register and attend the workshop. All participants must register for both the workshop and for at least one day of the conference.
List of Topics
- New adventures in fintech - Demonstrate the promise and perils of these new financial technologies, with particular attention to how they break and remake existing forms of trust, and their ability to support the diverse social roles and meaning of money.
- The human in the loop - How do we interact with intelligent and autonomous financial systems? How we should balance the potential efficiencies with our need for fairness and clarity?
- A panacea for financial inclusion - 1) the extent to which DFS are really able to support financial inclusion; 2) the value of cash in low income communities and beyond; 3) dystopian DFS e.g. social credit ratings; 4) complexities of designing DFS for low income communities, from designing for a range of literacies to fair algorithms, from tailoring flexible services to for-profit models; 5) and, the elephant in the room, to what extent financial inclusion actually equates with poverty reduction.
