This symposium seeks to bring together education researchers to promote a pan-continental conversation on critical issues pertaining to learning, teaching, design and development in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Education. Internationally, STEM education has been identified as an essential area for growth at the K-16 levels. At the same time, issues of democratization, equity, power and access, including recent decolonizing efforts in public education must be acknowledged as legitimate issues in STEM education.
By proposing to view STEM Education as critical literacies, our goal is to further and deepen scholarship of the research community led by the International Society for STEM in Education (ISSE) in the following areas:
- STEM education within and across settings (in-school, out-of-school)
- Interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity in STEM education
- STEM education and the Arts
- Bodies, mobility and STEM Education
- Technological innovation in STEM education
- Critical epistemology and STEM education
- Critical ethnographies in STEM education
- Research-Practice partnership in STEM education
We invite paper proposals (500 words, not including references) that go beyond studies of efficacy, and seek to advance key theoretical issues along these areas. Proposals must be submitted via Easy Chair (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=2017isse). All submissions will be peer reviewed by at least two referees. Deadline for submissions is July 1, and authors of selected papers will be notified by July 15 and invited to attend the symposium. Final versions of the papers (4000 - 6000 words, not including references) must be submitted by Sep , 2017 via Easy Chair.
During the conference, each paper will receive feedback from peers and the conference organizers. Revised and extended versions of selected papers on will be invited for publication in the following venues:
- Special issue on interactive learning environments for STEM education in a highly regarded, peer-reviewed journal;
- Chapters in a peer-reviewed edited book on STEM Education research to be published by a reputed publisher.
