The revered motto “wisdom builds” of Saint Louis University is a sustained reflection on the dynamic connection between wisdom and education. The inexorably profound relation between wisdom and education is geared towards the establishment of a better society where everyone can feel secure and where everyone can realize his potential. Wisdom is the unifying principle of all disciplines in creating a new social consciousness. This implies the perfection of human values as a function of wisdom. In other words, wisdom is the realization of perfect knowledge which educational institutions like ours strive to discover, reproduce and disseminate.
The role of education in social transformation is undeniably immense; it is called to instruct and lead society to a life of wisdom and virtue. Wisdom is deeply at the heart of paradigm-shifts in mindset and values that need to be explicitly encouraged in higher educational institutions like the CICM schools. In his inaugural address as the first president of Saint Louis University, Biblical scholar Fr. Gerard Linssen, CICM, spoke of the mission of the Catholic University in society and recognized Saint Louis University as “institute of wisdom established to contribute to the building of a new world.” Fr. Linssen’s insight into the nature and role of a Catholic University affirms one’s commitment to wisdom as constitutive element of the process as well as the aim of education. There is no underestimating the power of education for the establishment of a new world order. Education is a revolution in consciousness and is a key to social transformation. Building on a dynamic meaning of education as mission creates a heightened sense of social responsibility for the future of human civilization. Missionary education succeeds only if it goes beyond ideological and cultural borders, where schools are made hospitable to every human individual.
Attuned to Saint Louis University’s flagship of academic excellence and missionary spirit, the School of Advanced Studies wishes to coordinate its actions more actively with the rest of the sectors of the society. Recognizing the inclusive and multicultural nature (non-homogenous) of academic inquiry and research, the First Research Colloquium of the School of Advanced Studies of Saint Louis University takes the opportunity to open an avenue for dialogue and discussion among minorities, scholars, academics, students, government workers and non-government organizations, as well as other interested individuals, on the current state of the indigenous peoples particularly of Northern Philippines. The research colloquium is welcoming paper presenters who wish to talk about indigeneity and the dynamics of research and its intersections with other disciplines, in both local and regional levels.
