14:00-16:30 Session 1: Workshop on Accuracy Definitions and Measurements in CAOS

The workshop is part of an ISO standardization process undertaken by The International Society for Computer Assisted Orthopaedic Surgery (CAOS-International) for the development of a new consensus-based ISO standard on accuracy definitions and measurements in CAOS.

During the successful CAOS 2015 meeting in Vancouver, Canada, a special topic panel was dedicated to accuracy measurements in CAOS and has covered topics like use, development and assessment of new technologies. The idea was to initiate a discussion on accuracy standardization in CAOS by collecting various views and opinions from clinicians (JY Jenny, R Thornberry), scientists (K Radermacher), and industry (B Jaramaz, M Conditt). The session was also successful and consequently the assembly of attendees agreed there is an opportunity for the development of new recommendations on accuracy definitions and measurements in CAOS.

The objective of the workshop is the development of a first white-paper document consisting of the terminological basics including terms and definitions regarding accuracy and accuracy measurements in CAOS, and the methods for measuring accuracy of bone preparation tasks in CAOS, e.g. bone cutting, bone drilling, and bone fixation, within the workflow of orthopaedic interventions such as joint arthroplasty, spine instrumentation, corrective osteotomy, fracture reduction, and bone tumor resection.

In 2004, CAOS-International, in conjunction with the American Society for Testing of Materials (ASTM), undertook the creation of a new ASTM standard for assessing and comparing the performances of CAOS systems. This standard was published in 2010 as ASTM F2554-10. The standard F2554-10 is used to define the technical specifications (accuracy and precision) of navigation systems and positioning robots for CAOS. However, this standard cannot be directly used for measuring the accuracy of bone preparation tasks. The logical extension of this standard, which is mentioned in it, is to address task-specific procedures and surgical applications, including joint arthroplasty, osteotomy, tumor biopsy and/or resection, arthroplasty, pedicle screw insertion, spine surgery, and so forth.

The white-paper document will be cosigned by all the participants to the workshop and communicated to other societies and organizations like the ISO, ASTM, the International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (SICOT), Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery (CARS), Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention Society (MICCAI), IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS), International Society of Biomechanics (ISB), among others.

We encourage all CAOS registrants to come and actively participate in the workshop (no extra payment is required) and please let us know (email: olivier.cartiaux@uclouvain.beif you plan to attend so that we can prepare accordingly.
