Decentralization of manufacturing systems has amplified the problem of collecting and communicating the product and process specifications needed to make decisions about design, production, and supply chains tasks while delivering products to market. For example, with the growth of global production networks, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) have increasingly become system integrators rather than just manufacturers. Further, the difficulty of gathering actionable intelligence and lessons learned from processes later in the lifecycle to ensure better decision making earlier in the lifecycle is also amplified.
Thus, manufacturers need the ability to manage the development / redevelopment and deployment of new sub-systems in the immediate presence of legacy applications and systems. Model-Based Enterprise (MBE) must address this industrial need by coupling existing technologies with trusted cyber-physical systems (CPS), Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), and artificial intelligence (AI) to enable advanced configuration management of the product lifecycle. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and others advocate that making emerging technologies accessible to SMEs will ensure the U.S. industrial base remains competitive. MBE supports U.S. industry's competitiveness and address industry's need for interoperability across decentralized systems.
The goal of the MBE Summit is to identify challenges, research, implementation issues, and lessons learned in design, manufacturing, quality assurance, and sustainment of products and processes where a digital three-dimensional (3D) model of the product serves as the authoritative information source for all activities in a product's lifecycle. The theme of the MBE Summit 2019 is Democratizing the Implementation of MBE. The model-based community has moved beyond the question of “why is MBE important?” to “how do we deploy MBE?”. The 10th MBE Summit is focused on highlighting the long history of MBE and real-world implementations of MBE in practice. Academia, government, and industry practitioners are encouraged to submit papers topics related to this year’s theme using the following tracks: 1) Systems Engineering and Lifecycle Management; 2) Design; 3) Manufacturing; 4) Quality and Inspection; and 5) Operations, Logistics, and Sustainment.
Note: The MBE Summit 2019 organizers are using EasyChair to help publicize this call for papers, as a mechanism to collect and review submissions, and to disseminate review results to authors. For more details about the Summit, please visit the MBE Summit 2019 website.
Submission Guidelines
All papers must be original and not simultaneously submitted to another journal or conference. The following submission categories are welcome:
- Papers (1,000 words minimum; 4,000 words maximum, 4 figures maximum)
- Posters with abstract (250 words max)
- Vendor Demonstration with abstract (250 words max, product / process demonstration only, no presentation slides, vendors only)
Paper submissions will be accepted only from academia, government, and industry practitioners. Authors are encouraged to submit, to one of the five technical tracks of the summit, a manuscript by December 7 January 4 February 15, 2019 via Easy Chair. Posters will also be accepted for display and presentation at the summit. Poster abstracts will be reviewed by the organizing committee and (1) accepted as written or (2) rejected. Manuscripts will be peer reviewed and (1) accepted as written or (2) rejected. Reviews will be completed and authors notified by January 18 25, 2019 on a rolling basis. Manuscripts are limited to a minimum of 1,000 words and maximum of 4,000 words, not including the abstract, references, and a maximum of four (4) figures or tables. Submissions not meeting the requirements will be rejected automatically without review. Abstracts and manuscripts must be original contributions, not simultaneously submitted elsewhere, previously published or scheduled to be published. If accepted, final manuscripts and summit registration must be submitted by March 1 8, 2019 or the manuscript will be withdrawn from the summit. Manuscripts will be published after the summit via the NIST Advanced Manufacturing Series publication. Manuscripts will also be allotted at least a 30-minute presentation slot at the MBE Summit. Authors will retain copyright. Authors may also consult the MBE 2019 website for updates. Manuscript and poster submissions will only be accepted via https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=mbe2019.
Submissions will be aligned to one of the following five technical tracks:
- Systems Engineering and Lifecycle Management
- Design
- Manufacturing
- Quality and Inspection
- Operations, Logistics, and Sustainment
SOFTWARE AND SOLUTION PROVIDERS / VENDORS. This year, presentation-only submissions will not be accepted. To accommodate vendors, the MBE Summit 2019 will accept abstracts for product demonstrations. Vendors are encouraged to submit a 250 words (max) abstract that describes a 15-minute product and/or process demonstration to be given during a dedicated plenary session. No presentation slides will be allowed.
